Wolves make huge decision ahead of Chelsea clash with Diego Costa set for Stamford Bridge return

Wolves have sacked head coach Bruno Lage according to reports from CNN Portugal. It's a huge decision made by the Midlands club, who face Chelsea next weekend in the Premier League.

Wolves sit in the relegation zone, 18th with just six points from their opening eight games under the Portuguese coach. Their one victory for the season came in a 1-0 win over Southampton in September, meaning their current run sits at one win in their last 15 games played.

While their defence sits as the joint-third best in the division, their goal scoring is comfortably the worst with three goals scored so far. Lage may feel slightly hard done by though, given injuries to Raul Jimenez, Hwang Hee-chan and summer signing Sasa Kalajdzic.

This forced them to look into the free agent market, landing former Chelsea striker Diego Costa on a free transfer. The 33-year-old made his debut from the bench for Wolves in Saturday's 2-0 loss to West Ham, causing the Hammers plenty of trouble with his physicality and aerial ability.

The Brazilian is set to make his return to Stamford Bridge to face the Blues with his new side for the first time since leaving in 2017. During his three-years at the club he won two Premier Leagues and a League Cup, arguably being the last player to "break" to so-called number nine curse.

Wolves are yet to make a club statement on the position, but it could prove to be a match between two fresh managers, with Graham Potter recently taking charge of his first Premier League game since being named Chelsea manager. He beat Crystal Palace in the opener thanks to an injury time strike from former Eagles loanee Conor Gallagher.

"On a personal level, it's nice to get the first win under the belt," Potter said after the victory. "I’m really pleased for the players because the pattern has been starting well away from home and then conceding and not getting the three points or any points."
