Woking threat analysed ahead of potential Notts County dress rehearsal

With another test of their promotion credentials awaiting this weekend, Luke Williams expects a stern examination of his Notts County side as they welcome Woking to Meadow Lane on Saturday (5:30pm).

In their previous encounter earlier in the season, the Magpies emerged from The Laithwaite Community Stadium with all three points as Cedwyn Scott starred in a 3-2 win in Surrey.

It was an entertaining game for the neutral, with Notts not quite at their best but still managing to find themselves going into half-time with a two-goal advantage courtesy of Ruben Rodrigues' early penalty coupled with Scott's first-half brace.

Following the full-time whistle, the Magpies head coach described Darren Sarll's side as 'ferocious' with their high-pressing style of play, almost mirroring how Notts play with their high defensive line which both sides exploited during the contest.

The visitors have promotion hopes of their own, currently occupying third place in the National League table and a point ahead of Chesterfield with four games of the season remaining.

"I think I expect a similar approach because I don't think they particularly have another way," Williams said when asked how he believes The Cardinals will approach the encounter this weekend.

"I think that is how they see themselves and that is that they are an extremely tough, competitive team that makes you feel uncomfortable.

"You know you're in a game and I really like that - I don't like it so much when I am in the technical area and we are playing against them, but I am really fond of the team and I like their style.

"It's something that if you watch them, you know what you are going to get as a very bare minimum so I certainly will be preparing the players to be ready for that."

For the first time in their history, Woking qualified for the National League play-offs following their 1-1 draw with Southend on Monday.

With that, the upcoming fixture could prove to hold greater significance and a potential dress rehearsal for the play-offs should both sides meet at the end of the season - Williams explaining the thinking behind the fixture and the implications it could hold later down the line.

"I think both teams both have a really good idea about what the other is and what the threats are," he said.

"At this stage, there is so much available in terms of footage to watch and I think both teams are aware of each other.

"Of course, after the game, there will be more insight because certain players jump out or certain players didn't play in the game before - I have no doubts that both sets of staff will see new things that will strike them but as a whole, we have a very good grasp of each other and a very good understanding."
