WNBA Implements Charter Flight Program For Improved Travel Experience

WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert speaks at a news conference before Game 1 of basketball's WNBA Finals between the Connecticut Sun and the Washington Mystics, Sunday, Sept. 29, 2019, in Washin

The WNBA's new charter flight program, aimed at improving travel conditions for players, has encountered some expected challenges but is steadily making progress. Commissioner Cathy Engelbert expressed optimism that any initial kinks will be ironed out by the Olympic break.

Engelbert highlighted the logistical complexity involved in securing planes and pilots for long-haul flights, emphasizing the need to navigate various factors such as aircraft availability and pilot staffing. Despite these challenges, the WNBA managed to expedite the charter schedule process, thanks to its partnership with Delta and leveraging the NBA's existing blueprint.

The league, investing approximately $25 million annually for the next two years in charter flights, has utilized three types of planes — VIP, Delta mainline, and regional jets. Due to high demand for flights during peak months, most trips have been conducted on regional jets, albeit with some limitations such as refueling stops and lack of amenities like power outlets and WiFi.

Players have lauded the charter flights for significantly reducing travel time, eliminating early morning airport trips, and providing a more comfortable and efficient travel experience. The ability to rest and recover during flights has been particularly beneficial for players' well-being and performance.

Teams have been able to practice at home before flying out for road games, with the league ensuring that flight options are balanced across franchises. The WNBA's commitment to enhancing travel conditions was evident in its provision of charter flights for all road games this season, building on the initiative introduced last year for back-to-back games.

While the rollout of the charter program faced some initial challenges, players and officials alike have recognized the transformative impact of these flights on the overall player experience. Looking ahead, the WNBA aims to streamline operations and optimize the charter flight program for the benefit of all involved.
