Everyone has vaguely the same rough idea about something that Destiny 2 is going to announce alongside The Witch Queen, a new Darkness subclasses joining Stasis.
Luke Smith has previously said we would be seeing more subclasses, and the general consensus is that this is going to be a “green” subclass, and have some sort of poison/decay/Hive Soulfire theme to it.
Well, YouTuber Kujay, as ever, decided to go way, way above and beyond in trying to conceptualize what this fifth subclass could look like ahead of Bungie’s August 24 actual reveal. He came up with this idea in March and he and his artist Painthisice have been working on bringing it to life ever since. That has resulted in the following video, which is probably the best Destiny “What If…?” type realization I’ve ever seen.
Kujay is known for making videos “fixing” Destiny 2. Not in a way that calls out Bungie, but offers constructive criticism for improved systems and gameplay. All his videos are solid, but this one is really next level.
Kujay’s Corruption subclass has been mapped out in extreme detail. He borrows from Bungie’s Stasis concepts of Slow, Freeze, Shatter, and came up with three reactions of Corruption, Corrode, Decay and Transmute, with Hunters, Titans and Warlocks respectively specializing in each, although all three classes can use the different effects to a certain extent.
There’s a ton of detail in here in both conceptualizing the idea for Corruption (like Bungie’s other elemental subclasses, he explains LettuceDifferent’s chemistry-based explanation for its existence, along with lore relating to Hive Soulfire, which also inspired many of the abilities/names here), and also implementing it.
Hunters are Tormentors, giving them another roaming super and corrosive chains to whip their enemies.
Titans are Lancers, giving them their first ranged one-and-done super, and the ability to get headshot kills with a melee ability lance.
Warlocks are Alchemages, letting them roam around like Nokris shooting energy blasts, and also placing giant transmutation spheres on groups of enemies.
Now, I will be the first to admit that designing a subclass is one thing, and implementing it into a game in a coherent way is another. I am…a tiny bit suspicious that some of the ideas here might be a little too OP (the Hunter aspect that allows their melee chain to become a grappling hook, the Titan aspect that gives them an instant speed boost), but whatever, I love the base concept of all of this. Kujah has done a stellar job of coming up with concepts for this subclass, taking inspiration both from what’s currently in the game (a lot of Hive powers are referenced here) and what the current slate of subclasses are lacking (this really does a great job gap-filling for each class).
I admire the months of work that went into this, and the art Painthisice did to bring it to life is out of this world. I rarely feature what could derisively be called “fan concepts,” and yet Kujay, as ever, is on another plane of existence when it comes to this stuff.
