With Lions loss, Jaguars head coaching search should heat up

With the Detroit Lions’ loss to Washington in the NFC divisional round, things should now start to really heat up for the Jacksonville Jaguars and their head coaching search.

Two of the top candidates in this year’s hiring cycle are Lions’ offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and Detroit’s defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn. With several teams interested in both candidates, we might not see the head coaching openings start to fill until these two decide where they are going.

However, as long as the Lions were still in the playoffs, that decision-making process for each candidate was going to be delayed.

While both Johnson and Glenn were able to do virtual interviews for head coaching vacancies, neither would have been able to do in-person interviews until after the NFC Championship Game, had Detroit made it that far.

But now with the Lions out of the playoffs, Johnson and Glenn can take in-person interviews as soon as Monday and decide where they want to coach at any time after that.

Once those two, especially Johnson, make that decision, the rest of the coaching openings will likely fill very quickly after that.

According to Ian Rapoport, both Johnson and Glenn are “very high up” for the Jaguars, who will begin the second round of interviews this week. But now, don’t be surprised if things start to really speed up over the next handful of days.
