With baby due ‘any day now,’ Sean McVay says he’d miss Rams game for birth of son

The Los Angeles Rams should probably start thinking about contingency plans in case Sean McVay isn’t available to coach during one of their upcoming games in the month of October. He and his wife are expecting their first child, a son whose due date is October 24, but the coach says it “could be any day now.”

That’s not to say the little guy will be born on Sunday during the Rams’ game against the Cardinals, but it’s not out of the question for him to arrive in the middle of a contest coming up in the next few weeks.

If that does happen, McVay says he won’t be on the sidelines coaching.

“In terms of if he comes during a game or something like that? I won’t be at the game,” he said with a smile. “It’s coming up here in the next couple weeks, so could be any day now. Really feel fortunate that it’s been a smooth pregnancy. My wife has been incredible. It hasn’t quite hit me yet. He’s active and it seems like he’s ready to come at any moment. What a blessing that’ll be.

“When the little guy comes here, it’ll be a such a blessing for us. But it could be any day.”

The Rams had plans in place this offseason in the event that McVay retired temporarily, and that involved elevating Raheem Morris into a head coaching role. It’s reasonable to think that would be the case this time around if McVay can’t attend a game for the birth of his child.

Regardless of who might have to step in, McVay is going to be a busy man on and off the field in the next month or two.
