With a fast start Connacht can beat Leinster in Europe, insists Matthew Burke

Benetton are at the front of Connacht minds today but Matthew Burke admits that the prospect of the province's first-ever Champions Cup knock-out games is exciting.

The westerners face the Italians at 12 noon Irish time at the Stadio Monigo and, after that, Leinster will be in their sights for the two-legged round of 16 European affair.

Loosehead Burke starts today in a strong Connacht front row that includes Ireland internationals Dave Heffernan and Finlay Bealham.

And the 25-year-old is looking for a big performance to stay in the conversation for a heaving Sportsground occasion next Friday night, with the provinces to meet against the Aviva Stadium the following Friday.

"Coming out of the blocks at home would really put us on the front foot," said Burke of that first leg.

"We feel that if we can do a really good job there in our home patch, the pressure will be on them then at home to do better.

"Obviously we know it's a massive challenge with the amount of players they have to come back, but we always back ourselves, even against the top teams.

"They'll see themselves as having a good chance of winning the European Cup this year, potentially, but we'll definitely back ourselves.

"We've played them so many times so we're quite familiar with them - and we know how we can beat them.

"At the moment we're focusing more on Treviso, but come next week we'll be putting plans in place on how we can turn around the result last weekend with a much better performance.

"But we know if we bring the energy and physicality for 80 minutes then we definitely match them, if we can also bring that technical side and get our detail spot on.

Burke, who was born in London but moved to Mayo with his family as a one year old, played Gaelic Football at senior level with Ballinrobe as a teenager before focusing on rugby.

Having faced Tadhg Furlong in the scrum last year, he'd love to do so again in six days' time in the heat of European battle.

The sides last played as recently as last week, when Leinster romped home to a 45-8 victory as Connacht tired after Tom Daly's second minute red card.

"We know we'll have to play well because they're a top team, but we know that if we get our stuff right we'll be in with a shot at least," Burke said.

"It is strange with the two legs to be played - there's a lot of excitement around two big games, hopefully in front of big crowds here and at the Aviva, and around the importance of the two clashes.

"It will be an interesting dynamic, what kind of game plan we put in place from game to game, but from a personal point of view I'm excited at the prospect of being involved."
