A Coltness High pupil is close to smashing her fundraising target for a trip of a lifetime.
Sixth-year pupil Jay Harkin is travelling to Chile for 12 months to teach English to underprivileged children.
She needs to raise £6000 before she can head off in August and was delighted to raise more than £4000 at her recent race night.
Around 100 of Jay’s family and friends turned out at Wishaw Bowling Club to support her efforts.
Seventeen-year-old Jay, who is hoping to go to university to study teaching after her trip, said: “Thank you to everyone who came to my night and helped me raise an amazing amount of money. I really appreciate the support.”
Jay and one of her classmates, Ben Rudden, have been chosen to take part in this gap year experience by Project Trust.
The pair have been through a rigorous application process and are delighted to have made the final group.
Jay said: “I’m nervous but excited. It’s a daunting experience. I’ve never travelled anywhere alone before, never mind lived in a different country from my family.
“But I’ll regret it if I don’t go. It’s an amazing opportunity,it will be a brilliant experience, one I’ll always be grateful for.”
Morningside lad Ben, 17, is jetting off to China to also work in a school teaching English.
