Motherwell and Wishaw MSP Clare Adamson is urging constituents to stay safe ahead of Bonfire Night and to stick to organised public firework displays.
Last year, The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) received more than 1000 calls from the public during an eight-hour period. Firefighters across Scotland dealt with over 370 bonfires and there were eight attacks on crews reported.
It is illegal for the general public to use fireworks before 6pm or after 11pm – extended to midnight on November 5.
It is also a criminal offence for anyone to supply fireworks or other pyrotechnic articles to a person under 18.
Ms Adamson said: “I want to thank emergency workers for their enduring professionalism and dedication. Frankly, we could all make their jobs easier around Bonfire Night by heeding safety advice.
“I know people are keen to have fun and mark the occasion with friends and families. But every year, our emergency services face incredible pressures brought about by the unsafe use of fireworks and bonfires.
“Attacks of emergency crews using pyrotechnics are now an aggravated offence. I am glad the Scottish Government has taken this step in response to a despicable practice.
“The best thing you can do is stick to organised public displays. Organised displays are safer, better for the environment, and often less expensive.
“We have had several incidents with housefires across North Lanarkshire in recent years. Please do not be complacent and remember that fireworks are explosives.”
There is a public fireworks display at Strathclyde Park on November 5 organised by both North and South Lanarkshire Councils.
The fireworks display starts at 6.30pm, with the bonfire lit at 5.30pm.
