Wishaw man jailed after hitting pregnant woman with a shovel

A Wishaw man has been jailed after striking a pregnant woman on the body with a shovel.

William Reilly was put behind bars this week at Hamilton Sheriff Court after being found guilty of the attack.

On a number of occasions on June 18, at Caledonian Road and Wishaw Main Street, Reilly assaulted the woman by repeatedly spitting at her, striking her on the body with the shovel and then pushed her against a wall before punching her on the head.

The offence was committed while Reilly, of Thomson Avenue, was released on bail.

Reilly was cleared of seizing the woman by the throat.

The 42-year-old pleaded guilty to an amended charge of threatening and abusive behaviour likely to cause fear and alarm.

In Caledonian Road, he repeatedly shouted and kicked a car.

Sheriff Daniel Kelly QC insisted prison was the only option for Reilly and sentenced him to 10 months in jail.
