Wishaw boss blasts lack of clinical edge as they drop back in relegation zone

Wishaw boss David Dunn says his side must do more to kill teams off if they are to escape relegation from the West of Scotland Second Division.

The Beltane Park side fell back into the drop zone on Saturday after visitors Craigmark Burntonians overturned a 1-0 deficit to run out 2-1 winners.

Connor Docherty had opened the scoring for the hosts but they failed to capitalise on further chances and were left to pay the price. They returned to the bottom three and one point adrift of safety, although they have two games in hand over their rivals.

Dunn said: “It was a tough one. We did well to get ourselves in front and it is fine margins at this level. We had the opportunity to score a second goal and we didn’t take it, then Craigmark punish us with two set-pieces.

“The first one is a good header but, initially, we should do better. The second one is one where we’ve cleared our lines but then they get a free header at the corner that followed.

“It’s tough, but things like that are why we are where we are.

“There’s not a lot between the two teams and they are challenging near the top end of the table.

“Sometimes we don’t do enough in games when we are in the ascendancy and we don’t kill teams off. I think they got a lift from us missing chances and they punished us.”

Wishaw are back in action tonight (Wednesday) when they play one of their games in hand away to Forth Wanderers, followed by a trip to Muirkirk on Saturday.

Dunn added: “The games in hand are going down and down. We play our games in hand over the next two Wednesdays so we need to pick up points.

“It’s a case of patching the boys up and seeing what we can get. By next Wednesday we will get a clear idea of where we really are and take it from there. There’s a lot still to play for.

“To get ourselves into a good situation last week and then find ourselves back in there, is disappointing. We just need to pick up a couple of results and do what we can to avoid relegation.”
