Wisconsin Supreme Court Suspends Trump Lawyer From Ethics Panel

The Wisconsin Supreme Court has taken action against former President Donald Trump's Wisconsin lawyer, who was recently charged with a felony related to a 2020 fake electors scheme. The lawyer, Jim Troupis, has been suspended from a state judicial ethics panel following calls for his resignation due to his involvement in advising Republicans who sought to cast Wisconsin's electoral votes for Trump after he lost the 2020 election in the state to Democrat Joe Biden.

Troupis, along with another Trump attorney and a former Trump aide, was charged by the state Attorney General for their roles in the fake electors plot. The court did not provide a reason for the suspension, but it was effective immediately. Troupis, a former judge, did not respond to requests for comment.

The Judicial Conduct Advisory Committee, from which Troupis was suspended, is responsible for providing formal opinions and advice to judges and judicial officers regarding the state's code of judicial conduct. Troupis had been a member of the committee since 2020 and was reappointed to a second term in 2023.

Following the suspension, calls have been made for Troupis to be replaced on the judicial commission, similar to demands for the removal of one of the fake electors from the bipartisan state elections commission. Troupis and others involved in the fake electors scheme settled a civil lawsuit last year, with Troupis stating that the actions taken were a reasonable course given the circumstances.

Documents revealed that the strategy in Wisconsin mirrored similar moves in other swing states, with Troupis and his colleague drafting memos on how to prepare fake elector certificates. Despite efforts to challenge the 2020 election results, including lawsuits filed by Troupis, the Wisconsin Supreme Court upheld Biden's win, who had won the state by a narrow margin.
