Supporters of former President Donald Trump have submitted petitions seeking a recall election targeting Wisconsin's Assembly Speaker Robin Vos. The move comes after Vos refused to impeach the state's top elections official and did not support efforts to decertify President Joe Biden's win in the state in 2020.
Vos, the longest-serving Assembly speaker in state history, has been a key figure in the GOP-led Legislature. The recall petition, spearheaded by a local business owner, cited Vos' failure to impeach the elections official and his stance on election security as reasons for the recall.
The petition, which included nearly 11,000 signatures, well above the required threshold, is now under review by the Wisconsin Elections Commission. Vos has expressed skepticism about the validity of the signatures and questioned the motives behind the recall effort.
If the petition is deemed valid, a recall election could take place between late April and late May. Vos has 10 days to challenge any signatures before a final decision is made. The recall effort's organizer has indicated that if the recall attempt fails, they may support a Republican challenger to Vos in the upcoming primary.
Vos, who faced a primary challenge in 2022, has been a target of Trump supporters who believe the 2020 election results should be overturned. Despite the challenges, Vos won the primary and the subsequent general election with a significant margin.
