Wirral to get ‘world’s fastest’ electric car charging points

Plans for top quality electric car charging technology in Wirral have been passed.

Gridserve, a sustainable energy business, submitted plans for 36 electric vehicle charging bays at the Wirral International Business Park in Bromborough last summer.

At the site, drivers will be able to charge their electric vehicles in 20-30 minutes, the world’s fastest charging rate according to Gridserve, with the potential for even quicker charging in the future.

Wirral Council has now approved the plans for the site and said there was little chance of the space, which used to be occupied by an office building, being used for employment.

The statement added that any impact on the industrial area would be overcome by the “clear environmental benefits” of the plan.

As well as the charging bays, the site will contain a coffee shop, convenience retail, and an airport-style lounge with high-speed internet.

Under the proposal, the lounge will double-up as a learning centre to raise interest and share information about electric vehicles, helping people to make the transition to electric vehicles as quickly as possible.

Gridserve said the charging bays will be low-cost, as well as high-speed, and will be powered by 100% renewable energy.

Schemes such as this could particularly help people who do not have access to off-street parking for home charging to run an electric vehicle on a day-to-day basis.

This is especially important as we are now less than nine years away from a ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles.

Speaking last summer, Toddington Harper, chief executive of Gridserve, said: “A large number of affordable EVs [electric vehicles] are now available, with many more on the way and we’re about to see a steep growth curve in electric vehicle adoption.

“By developing this state-of-the-art Electric Forecourt in Bromborough, we’ll be supporting Wirral Council, local residents, and the UK as a whole to tackle air pollution, encourage low-carbon transport, and meet climate targets, while also offering a solution that’s future proofed to support the mass uptake of electric vehicles.

“Bromborough is in the unique position of being at the forefront of over 100 sites across the UK to host a Gridserve Electric Forecourt.

“Every site will be supporting the grid with on-site batteries and supplied by solar energy.

"With convenient, dependable, ultra-fast charging, we’re making charging an EV as easy as using petrol stations, with the best possible customer experience.”
