Coronavirus cases have fallen in Wirral, as the borough continues to make major leaps forward in the battle against the virus.
In the week up to May 11, Wirral’s infection rate was 94 per 100,000. That is a 24% drop on last week’s figures and the lowest rate seen in Wirral since last June.
The current figure is also well below the highs of more than 1,000 per 100,000 we saw near the end of March. However, it is difficult to make direct comparisons between current figures and those from before the end of March, as free testing is no longer available.

But the significant fall in cases is a good sign. It is part of a clear pattern of falling case rates which has been emerging in recent weeks.
There were 44 covid patients in Wirral’s hospitals on the most recent numbers we have, which cover May 10. That is down from 48 last week and massively down on worrying numbers we have seen in recent times.
At the start of March, the borough had just 15 covid patients, but by early April around 100 people were being treated for the virus in Wirral’s hospitals. In recent weeks, things have dramatically improved.
On April 12, the borough had 98 covid patients, this then fell to 58 on April 26, before falling to 48 on May 3 and just 44 by May 10.
These numbers may still be above the level seen at the start of March, but they are encouraging nonetheless. The number of deaths in Wirral recorded within 28 days of a positive test for Covid-19 remains in single figures.
