Wiper and True offers work experience to women and non-binary people to tackle ‘gender imbalance' in beer industry

A Bristol brewery is offering work experience to anyone who identifies as female or non-binary in a bid to tackle gender imbalance in the beer industry.

St Werburghs-based Wiper and True says it is welcoming applications from female and non-binary people to mark International Women's Day on March 8.

The independent brewery is looking for people who are keen to explore a career in the industry which they say is "heavily male-dominated."

Two people will be chosen for a day's work experience on March 8, brewing one of the company's popular beers.

They say the opportunity is perfect for women or non-binary people who may be unsure where to start, or are struggling to get their foot in the door of the industry.

Wiper and True’s Marketing Manager Alice Howells said: “It’s no secret that craft beer remains a heavily male-dominated world, and for many women this makes gaining industry experience and access a challenge. Within Wiper and True, we have significantly more employees who identify as men than women or non-binary.

"This International Women’s Day our team wants to take small, practical steps towards improving this imbalance. We know this opportunity won’t fix all the problems around sexism, stereotypes and inclusivity in beer, but we hope that it will give a couple of people the chance to look behind the scenes into an industry they are interested in working in."

"We see this year as a pilot scheme, and if the trial day is useful to our applicants this year we have exciting plans to roll out a broader work experience offering programme our business next year.”

The company hopes to provide more work experience opportunities when its new production site opens at Old Market next year.

It says it will cover expenses of up to £150 per person for travel or a place to stay in Bristol, in order to make the opportunity "accessible to everyone."

Anyone who is interested in applying should complete a short application form on the company's website by 9am on Monday, February 7.

Successful applicants will be contacted on or before Friday, February 11.
