A significant winter storm is making its way through the mid-Atlantic states, bringing forecasts of heavy snow and ice accumulations that could lead to power outages and dangerous travel conditions. The National Weather Service has issued warnings for much of Virginia and West Virginia, where travel is expected to be treacherous from Tuesday through early Wednesday.

Virginia Governor declared a state of emergency ahead of the storm, resulting in the closure of schools and government offices throughout the state on Tuesday. The heaviest snowfall, up to 10 inches, is predicted in northern and central Virginia, as well as eastern West Virginia. Ice accumulations could range from a glaze to half an inch in certain areas, increasing the likelihood of power outages and tree damage.

Utility companies are gearing up for potential problems, with Appalachian Power requesting additional workers to assist with storm-related issues. In East Tennessee, forecasters are warning of an increased flood threat due to heavy rainfall expected throughout the week.

Meanwhile, a separate storm system is set to bring heavy snow from Kansas to the Great Lakes region. In Detroit, tragic news emerged as two children were found dead from exposure to the cold, highlighting the dangers of extreme weather conditions.

In Oregon, preparations are underway to address the severe cold, with shelters opening and outreach programs being enhanced to support vulnerable populations. The weather service is forecasting dangerously low temperatures and freezing rain in the Portland area, urging residents to take precautions.

As the winter weather continues to impact various parts of the country, forecasters are also monitoring an atmospheric river expected to bring heavy rainfall and snow to California in the coming days.
