Blizzard conditions are currently affecting northern California and Nevada, leading to winter weather alerts across nine states. The snowy conditions and low visibility have forced the closure of parts of I 80 near the California-Nevada state line, with no definite timeline for reopening. The ongoing storm has already brought impressive snowfall totals, with several areas receiving at least three feet of snow, and more snow is expected to fall.
The extreme winter storm is causing difficult travel conditions, with strong winds contributing to reduced visibility and hazardous road conditions. The damaging winds have also resulted in power outages in some areas. While the winds are expected to gradually decrease by Monday, there is still a risk of additional outages and potential tree damage, especially in higher elevations.
Fortunately, the snowfall amounts are forecasted to decrease by Monday, allowing residents to begin clearing snow around their homes. However, another round of moisture is expected to bring heavier snowfall, potentially adding another one to two feet on top of what has already accumulated.
Despite the improving conditions, some areas could still receive significant snowfall through the week, with reports of power outages and challenging travel conditions persisting. The winds, although gradually calming down, may still reach speeds of 40 to 70 miles per hour, posing a risk of further outages and tree damage until later in the week.
