Tennis star Jessica Pegula is the richest sportsperson in the world.
She is competing at Wimbledon 2023, and is currently fifth seed worldwide.
The American is worth more than Roger Federer, Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams combined. That figure is £850million, while the world number four seed comes from an incredibly wealthy family, who are worth more than £5.8billion.
Pegula's father Terrence made his billions from natural gas development, and owns hockey team Buffalo Sabres and NFL team Buffalo Bills. He actually outbid Bon Jovi and Donald Trump for the £1.1billion purchase of the Buffalo Bills.
The entire empire was generated from a loan of £6,000 which Terrence got from friends and family in 1983. With the money he bought East Resources, according to Forbes, and sold the bulk of his assets in the company in 2010 for £3.6billion, so it's fair to say he made his money back!
To truly give some idea on the scale of their wealth, Terrence has a £60m superyacht which costs £6.3million a year just to run. It's 200ft long and there are 19 staff on board.
Pegula chose to pursue her dream and play the sport she loves as a job, and is very good at it too. So far, she has earned £7.1million in prize money, and will also be the heir to her father's fortune.
