Wimbledon 'have plans in place' if Andy Murray announces retirement during Championships

Wimbledon are plotting a raft of tributes should Andy Murray officially announce his retirement plan at next month’s tournament.

Murray has already made it clear that he does not plan to play much beyond this summer, with the Olympic Games in Paris tipped to be his final event.

And it is thought that the two-time Wimbledon champion might choose the upcoming Championships to make it official.

There has been talk of a statue to mark Murray at the All England Club and, while officials said they have extensive plans, they would not reveal the finer points.

Instead, they plan to be guided by Murray’s wishes and are already in talks with his management team.

Wimbledon chief executive Sally Bolton said: “We’ve certainly got plans in place and we’re ready and prepared. It’s Andy’s decision and we’ll be led by him.

“We’ve got plans. They’re very adaptable. This is Andy’s call so we’ll very much be led by him. At the right point in time we’ll make those announcements.”
