Wimbledon draw 2023 as Andy Murray faces fellow Brit and Djokovic first match confirmed

Andy Murray faces fellow Brit Ryan Peniston in the first round of Wimbledon on Tuesday, with a tough second-round clash with world No 5 Stefanos Tsitsipas or 2020 US Open champion Dominic Thiem looming. Wildcard Peniston, 27, is a cancer survivor who reached the second round on his Wimbledon debut last year.

British No 1 Cam Norrie faces Czech qualifier and world No 107 Tomas Machac in his opening contest, while wildcards Arthur Fery and George Loffhagen will take on No 3 seed Daniil Medvedev and No 6 seed Holger Rune respectively. Meanwhile, the tournament's No 1 seed Carlos Alcaraz faces a tough-looking opener against the experienced London-based Frenchman Jeremy Chardy, reports the Express.

Novak Djokovic - a seven-time SW19 winner - starts his title defence against Argentine world No 67 Pedro Cachin on the other side of the draw, with British No 2 Dan Evans facing French world No 76 Quentin Halys. Last year’s runner-up Nick Kyrgios, who has been suffering from a knee injury, is in the draw to play wildcard David Goffin.

Djokovic is out to win a fifth consecutive title to draw level with the great Roger Federer on eight overall and move to an incredible 24 career Grand Slams. He has a winnable second-round match against Jordan Thompson or Brandon Nakashima, and could take on Tomas Martin Etcheverry or Stan Wawrinka after that.

The Serb could face Andrey Rublev in the quarter-finals if he gets past an opponent likely to be Lorenzo Musetti or Hubert Hurkacz in round four, with a potential showdown in the final against world No 1 Alcaraz.

Unseeded Murray has warmed up for his favourite Slam with Challenger triumphs in Surbiton and Nottingham, but he will face a huge test to get to deep into this draw. Jan Choinski has drawn Dusan Lajovic of Serbia in the opening round, with Liam Broady up against France's Constant Lestienne. Broady could take on Casper Ruud in his second match.
