Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza is marrying a fan who asked her for a selfie in New York

Wimbledon winner Garbine Muguruza will wed a New York City fan who requested a selfie with her.

When Venus Williams, a tennis legend and five-time Wimbledon winner, was defeated by the Spanish singles player in the 2017 women's singles final, Muguruza joined the All England club's annals.

Although luck didn’t strike Muguruza the same way at the 2021 US Open, as she only reached the fourth round.

Luck did strike the 29-year-old elsewhere, though, when a fan asked for a picture in Central Park.

The player explained to HOLA! Spain her love story with the fan, who turned out to be model Arthur Borges.

“My hotel was close to Central Park and I was bored, so I thought I should go for a walk,” she explained.

“I go out and I run into him on the street. Suddenly, he turns and says, ‘Good luck at the US Open.’ I was left thinking, ‘Wow, he’s so handsome.’”

The pair went on a few dates before eventually becoming a couple and getting engaged.

“It felt weird. I was thinking something else and then when he proposed I started crying,” Muguruza said.

“I didn’t know how to react. I said yes in the midst of tears, it was very romantic.”

The former tennis champion claimed that Borges’s involvement in the fashion sector rather than sport is what draws her to him.

They are expected to marry later this year.

Last year, Muguruza was placed among the top 10 but, at the end of 2022, she declared that she would be taking a break from the sport to concentrate on her personal life.

She skipped the French Open and won’t be competing at Wimbledon as a result of that break.

Muguruza is well-known for her aggressive style of play and has been playing since the age of three.
