Wimbledon 2024 tennis preview
Some would argue that even 2024's sporting summer of love is lacking until that first crack of fluffy yellow ball set to strings brought by Wimbledon fortnight. The SW19 lawns have been manicured, the medium-sized nation's worth of strawberries packaged and Pimm's prepared, with 2024 Championships set fair to be the most intriguing yet.
Carlos Alcaraz will return to south west London and defend his men's singles title as a fairly heavy favourite. The Spaniard is coming off the back of victory at the French Open in early June, beating Jannik Sinner and Alexander Zverev in successive punishing matches.
Sinner, the reigning Australian Open champion, has the monster serve and huge forward that suits grass and is the top seed this year as the new world number one. The Italian also won the Halle warm-up tournament on grass.
As it stands, Novak Djokovic is expected to play, having recovered quicker than expected from knee surgery. The Serb goes for an eighth Wimbledon title, to tie Roger Federer's record.
And what of home favourite Andy Murray? Well, the two-time champion had minor back surgery less than two weeks before the tournament and seems likely to take part only in the doubles in what could be his final main-draw appearance in his home slam. Fellow Brit Jack Draper, meanwhile, won his first ATP title at the Stuttgart Open and is in form, while big-hitting American Tommy Paul looked good in winning Queen's.
In the women's singles, all eyes will be on top seed Iga Swiatek. The Pole was imperious at Roland Garros but doesn't have the best relationship on grass, where her movement is overpowered by shot makers. The smart money could be on Aryna Sabalenka – the Australian Open champion – having the power game to come through.
Defending champion Marketa Vondrousova has struggled this year and it would be a major surprise to see the Czech win again. New world number two Coco Gauff first broke through at Wimbledon, with a first round defeat of Venus Williams in 2019, and the US Open champion should go well again.
Ons Jabeur has reached the final in the past two years and will be the people's choice to finally lift the Venus Rosewater Dish. Brit Katie Boulter will also hope to progress well, having won two WTA titles this year (one on the grass at Nottingham), while compatriot Emma Raducanu is finding some form again.
Wimbledon is arguably the tournament the world's top tennis stars look forward to most and is not to be missed, especially with those ranking points up for grabs again this year. Read on and we'll show you how to watch a Wimbledon 2024 live stream free online.
