Wimbledon 2023: Alcaraz beats Jarry in epic, Jabeur sees off Andreescu – as it happened

Some reflections on Andy Murray from Kevin Mitchell:

Well thank you for joining me for day six of Wimbledon! Katie Boulter is still to come on centre court, she will face defending champion Elena Rybakina on centre court and we will have a report on all the action after it is wrapped up! We will be back tomorrow to report day seven live, see you then!

Jabeur, last year’s finalist, said: “I have got to thank the rain a little bit for letting me speak to my coach! I felt I didn’t play my best tennis. I wanted t be more aggressive but I am playing against a grand slam champion. She made the mission tougher today. I am very emotional coming back here after a great final last year. It’s one of, if not my favourite court. I also love the crowd, the energy, how beautiful it is. It was a little frustrating, her drop shots and slices were kind of annoying! You have to do what you can do. Billie [Jean King] is watching and I was going to ask her and say ‘what should I do?’. I think I’m sleeping on the couch tonight, I looked at him [her husband] during the game and I think he wasn’t happy with it!”

Jabeur looks up to the sky, or roof, and screams. A huge win! Andreescu is straight off court but waves to the crowd as she goes. She also signs some things for some young fans.

Jabeur fights back to win 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 against Andreescu

Jabeur has done it, what a comeback performance! The first point goes to Jabeur and she just needs three more to go into the second week at Wimbledon. The second point goes Andreescu’s way with Jabeur making an error, the tension is palpable! And again Jabeur makes an unforced error, Andreescu 30-15 up. An ace levels the game and Jabeur has match point as Andreescu pushes a shot too long. And an ace does it! Andreescu challenges the ball to delay celebration – it is in!

Jabeur breaks to serve for the match! Jabeur *3-6, 6-3, 5-4 Andreescu (* denotes next server)

Andreescu’s backhand is called out, that would have been a call I would have challenged but the Canadian let’s it slide. Andreescu then hits the net with Jabeur 30-0 up. If she breaks here she will serve for the game. A double fault gifts Jabeur a break point, three actually as she is 40-0 up and she gets it first time of asking with Andreescu hitting the net.

Jabeur 3-6, 6-3, 4-4 Andreescu* (* denotes next server)

There were new balls introduced before this game. The first point went to Jabeur as Andreescu’s return was out and she can’t return another serve to see Jabeur 30-0 up. An unforced error from Andreescu comes next but then Jabeur pushes her shot out. 40-15 and Andreescu pushes it out.

Jabeur *3-6, 6-3, 3-4 Andreescu (* denotes next server)

A drop shot sees Andreescu return but it is out, lovely play by Jabeur. The 2022 Wimbledon finalist hits the net to level it 15-15. Jabeur now challenges a call that was called out and it was a good decision, it is in! Jabeur hits the ball and it’s called out and it is upheld – she has no more challenges. A great forehand shot wins her the game.

Jabeur 3-6, 6-3, 3-3* Andreescu (* denotes next server)

After a 50 minute wait the game is back underway, Andreescu putting in two errors to give Jabeur a 30-0 lead. Jabeur then hits the net and her backhand has too much on it to level the game 30-30. The forehand is out for Jabeur and Andreescu has break point. We head to deuce after an Andreescu error. Jabeur thought she had an ace but it was called out, the call stood after a challenge. Andreescu gets the advantage and another break point but Jabeur saves it again. An ace this time gives Jabeur the advantage, can she see this out now? She does with a lovely splice on her backhand.

Here we go, finally!

No sign of Jabeur or Andreescu yet. The wait continues.

I believe Zverev and Berrettini will proceed with the match, both players warming up now. Jabeur and Andreescu should be out on court soon.

It seems Zverev is also not happy, I think both players are concerned about a slippery surface. Jabeur and Andreescu are due back out onto centre court at 8.10 but we will see.

Berrettini is not happy with the conditions on court 1 and so the officials are reviewing the situation. They are discussing with both players now.

There is no more play on the outside courts tonight so all of those games will be postponed. Court 1 and Centre continue.

The grounds people are still sorting out the grass on centre court, I think a lot of rain fell before the game was suspended. It seems a stupid decision to open the roof with the forecasts.

How long does it take to shut the roof? Google suggests 10 minutes but the game as been suspended for almost half an hour!

The clock ticks on but the play is still not underway. If I were on centre court I would be a bit miffed, Boulter is on afterwards and this could mean the fans don’t get to see that game conclude with Wimbledon stopping play around 10.30.

We are still waiting for play to resume, why did they open the roof after the Alcaraz match? Seems ludicrous.

We will be getting back underway shortly, the cover is off on centre court and the players will have a chance to warm-up again before they start this final set again. The score stands at Jabeur 3-6, 6-3, 2-3 Andreescu.

While we wait for this game to get back underway, look at this:

The outside court matches have been suspended again because of the rain, England eh!

Yeah confirmation there that the centre court roof was open, why they decided to open it again is beyond me, but it has started to rain so they are going to close it here.

The BBC have decided to cut to Rune’s interview, there is a break in Jabeur and Andreescu’s match but seems a strange cut though I think they are closing centre court’s roof, he describe the match as one of his most favourite to play. “It’s a great moment for sure, I am so happy to be in the fourth round for the first time”.

Jabeur breaks back! Jabeur *3-6, 6-3, 2-3 Andreescu (* denotes next server)

Jabeur gets the first point with a stretching Andreescu hitting the net. Another error from Andreescu has Jabeur 30-0 up. Can she break right back? Not yet with Andreescu’s smash getting her on the board. But how about this? Jabeur has break point with Andreescu hitting the net and a double fault sees Jabeur break!

Andreescu breaks! Jabeur 3-6, 6-3, 1-3* Andreescu (* denotes next server)

An error on her own serve sees Andreescu ahead and a great smash, after Jabeur slips in her return, puts her 30-0 up. And another error gifts Andreescu break point! She can’t take it first time of asking through an error and another forced hit let’s Jabeur right back in – Andreescu has one more break point and she gets it!

Jabeur *3-6, 6-3, 1-2 Andreescu (* denotes next server)

A huge forehand gets Andreescu 15-0 up and a Jabeur error sees her 30-0. Andreescu expertly sees out the match with great ball control.

Rune defeats Davidovich Fokina 6-3, 4-6, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (10-8)

What a match! Davidovich Fokina really took the game to Rune but in the end the Dane had enough to see out the match on tie break! Wow.

Dimitrov has taken the second set 6-3 against Tiafoe after winning the first. Rune is in a tie break with Davidovich Fokina in their fifth set.

Jabeur 3-6, 6-3, 1-1* Andreescu (* denotes next server)

Andreescu pushes the ball out as the second game of this final set begins. The ball just clips the net and rolls over to give Jabeur 30-0 and then the ball does the same but this time it lands in Andreescu’s favour! A long rally ends with an error from Jabeur and the game is 30-30 but she plays a good shot to be one point from closing out the game. and she does just that.

Jabeur *3-6, 6-3, 0-1 Andreescu (* denotes next server)

Andreescu gets the final set underway with an ace and a powerful forehand to put her 30-0 up. Jabeur then can’t return the serve but the Tunisian whizzes a ball past her opponent to get on the board. But Jabeur then makes an error.

Jabeur wins second set to send match with Andreescu to a third

Jabeur wins the second set 6-3. She is serving for this set and starts it with a great hit and follows it up with a powerful forehand. Another great shot down the right gives her set point and she grabs it at the first chance.

Jabeur *3-6, 5-3 Andreescu (* denotes next server)

Andreescu raced to a 30-0 lead and went 40-0 up after a long shot bounced in and Jabeur was unable to return it. An Andreescu error sees Jabeur get her first point of the game and another has Jabeur right back in this. We go to deuce as Andreescu hitting the net, if she loses this game it will be frustrating for her after having such a lead. Andreescu has advantage as Jabeur can’t return her serve but a double fault has us back to deuce. Andreescu has advantage but it’s Jabeur who gets the applause as she headed the tennis ball back to the ball people. Back to deuce we go as Andreescu forces the ball long. Andreescu finally wraps up the game.

Keys has defeated Kostyuk in a dominant 6-4, 6-1 win on court 12. A very strong performance by the American.

Berrettini has won the first set against Zverev! He has taken a convincing 6-3 set, second set just underway.

Jabeur 3-6, 5-2 Andreescu* (* denotes next server)

It seems this Wimbledon crowd is backing Jabeur as Andreescu makes an error and there are cheers reverberating around centre court. A great forehand winner sees Jabeur 30-0 up and another error from Andreescu puts her a point from holding. And she holds!

Jabeur breaks! Jabeur *3-6, 4-2 Andreescu (* denotes next server)

It turns out hawkeye shows if Andreescu kept the challenge she would have been correct! Jabeur wins the first point but an unforced error from her levels it, Jabeur talking to herself in frustration. Another error from Jabeur gifts Andreescu 30-15. It’s all level again though as Andreescu pops the ball out and a great forehand shot from Jabeur gives her break point. And she gets it! A huge moment.

Madison Keys won the first set against Marta Kostyuk 6-4 and she is leading 2-1 in the second.

Jabeur 3-6, 3-2 Andreescu* (* denotes next server)

Jabeur really needs to hold serve and stay in this. She loses out on the first point but levels it after an Andreescu error. The Canadian then challenges a call on Jabeur’s serve but it was in. It goes 30-30 as Jabeur smacks the net – more errors than usual in her game today. She gets the next one though to be in touching distance of holding, Andreescu’s shot is called out and she puts in a challenge but she cancels it.

Jabeur *3-6, 2-2 Andreescu (* denotes next server)

A brilliant forehand shot sees the Canadian 15-0 up, some real power behind her hits. Jabeur has an unforced error and another one, having too much on her forehand, puts Andreescu 40-0 up. She wins it with another Jabeur error!

Dimitrov has taken the first set 6-2 against Tiafoe, they have just started their second set. Zvrev and Berrettini are 2-2 in the first set.

Jabeur 3-6, 2-1* Andreescu (* denotes next server)

Thank you Tom! Hello everyone, I am back and I’ve returned to a slight upset here. Jabeur was in the final last year, can she keep herself in this? She starts well on her serve but Andreescu hits back. Tjhey go toe-to-toe again with 30-30, Jabeur is looking a little shaky here but she must hold to get a foothold. Jabeur’s shot clops the net and bounces over and some excellent close to net action from Andreescu sends it to deuce. Jabeur gets the advantage and sees it out well.

Jabeur* 3-6, 1-1 Andreescu (* denotes next server): Jabeur just can’t make any inroads into Andreescu’s serve, and the Canadian’s mixing it up beautifully, a dinked drop shot for 40-0 exemplifying her control and confidence. A rare double-fault ensues but a fierce backhand winner seals the hold.

And with that I’ll hand you back to Sarah. Enjoy!

Jabeur 3-6, 1-0 Andreescu* (* denotes next server): Errors are creeping into Jabeur’s game and a lame forehand into the net for 0-15, followed by a similarly limp backhand for 15-30, is an ominous start to the second set. She responds with an ace before yet another forehand into the net gives Andreescu a break point. An angled forehand winner from Jabeur saves it, and it’s followed by a rare Andreescu mistake, sending a gimme of a volley wide. And Jabeur goes on to secure a vital hold.

Jabeur* 3-6 Andreescu (* denotes next server): Andreescu is serving excellently and in the blink of an eye is 30-0 up before a gorgeous low back-spun drop shot delivers her three set points. And she converts the first of them when Jabeur can only return a vicious forehand into the net. Andreescu takes the set, and is looking the likelier winner.

Jabeur 3-5 Andreescu* (* denotes next server): Jabeur crunches a deceptively powerful back-of-court forehand winner to the corner for 30-0, and another one to the opposite corner seals a hold to love again. But Andreescu is now serving for the set.

Jabeur* 2-5 Andreescu (* denotes next server): Jabeur needs a break of serve though, and doesn’t currently look like getting one. Andreescu, striking the ball powerfully and cleanly, holds to 15.

An intriguing looking match-up between Alexander Zverev, the No 19 seed, and Matteo Berretini, the 2021 runner-up here, is under way on Court One. They’re in the first game.

Jabeur 2-4 Andreescu* (* denotes next server): Jabeur responds impressively, elegantly holding to love on her serve. Frances Tiafoe’s third-round match against Grigor Dimutrov is under way on Court No 2. It’s 2-2 and with serve in the first set.

Updated

Jabeur* 1-4 Andreescu (* denotes next server): Andreescu whizzes through a service hold to love. She’s a previous grand slam champion for a reason, and Jabeur has problems to solve here.

Jabeur 1-3 Andreescu* (* denotes next server): Some robust returning from Andreescu claws her back to 30-all and she earns the first break point of the match when Jabeur blooters a forehand long. Jabeur saves it with a firm volley at the net but Andreescu belts a brilliant double-handed backhand return to the corner to grab another, which she converts when Jabeur sloppily nets. Andreescu is looking confident here.

Out on Court 3 Helger Rune, the sixth seed, has dragged his match against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina to a fifth set, winning the fourth set 6-4.

Jabeur* 1-2 Andreescu (* denotes next server): This is Jabeur’s first appearance on Centre Court since last year’s defeat in the final but no signs of angst so far. An impossibly delicate sliced forehand winner that kisses the line for 15-15 is evidence of that. Andreescu can do forensice angled winners too though, such as her volley at the net for 30-30. She goes on to hold. This already looks a fascinating contest.

And here you are for yer daily diary:

Jabeur 1-1 Andreescu* (* denotes next server): A well angled smash takes Jabeur into a 30-0 lead in her opening service game and an effortlessly brilliant angled forehand into the corner wins the Tunisian the next point in style. An easy hold.

Updated

Jabeur* 0-1 Andreescu (* denotes next server): Jabeur races to a 0-30 lead on Andreescu’s serve before the Canadian reels off three points on the spin. Jabeur gets it back to deuce but a deft low volley at the net and a wel-controlled long rally give Andreescu the service hold.

Sabalenka beats Blinkova 6-2, 6-3

Another treat looms on Centre Court, because next up there is Ons Jabeur v Bianca Andreescu. Meanwhile, Aryna Sabalenka has won more comfortably than in the previous round, seeing off Anna Blinkova in straight sets.

Tsitsipas speaks: “I wasn’t hopeless,” he humble-brags, disarmingly. “Today was the first time this week I’ve made it easy for myself. I’ve had a few thrillers in the past few days – they say it took 14 days to build the arc and it feels like the last few days I’ve been doing that, playing every sinigle day. It’s never easy when there’s rain and it’s nice to come back here and feel the level of the crowd like I’ve not had before. The second set was importnat because if you don’t fight back and come abck with solutions it’s a very different game. I’m proud of myself, I wasn’t hopeless, my mindset was good. I felt the momentum switching with the tiebreak in the second set.

“The body for sure is not as fresh as it’s been – I’ve done a lot of running the last four days but once the adrenaline kicks in I forget about everything.”

Tsitsipas beats Djere 6-4, 7-6, 6-4

Thanks Sarah. Evening all, and this could be another long one. And first off let’s zip over to Court No 2, where Stefanos Tsitsipas has three match points against Lazlo Djere, and he converts the first of them with emphatic serve-volleying. He must be knackered after the past three days’ exertions but he’s looking in as good a shape as he ever has at Wimbledon.

Well I am going to have some dinner after that match! Wow, a huge match on day six. I’m handing over to Tom Davies for an hour, I’ll see you soon.

Sabalenka is close to beating Blinkova – she’s 6-2, 5-3 up

Alcaraz said: “it has been tough, Nico is a really great player. He is playing really well. We played in Rio and it was tough, here as well. I am just really happy with the level I play to get through. Thank you very much. I stay focused, I knew I would have my chances. He was really close, he had great shots. I would say the key is to believe and stay focused all the time. I remember a lot of matches that I have watched here as a kid, I watched so many videos as well. I am really happy to play here, it is something I dreamed of since I was young. This court you feel something special. This is the most beautiful court I have played on.”

Jarry signs a few balls and he gives away a few rackets to young fans. Alcaraz claps his opponent off before his on court interview.

That was quite a match! To come back in that final set from being 3-0 down to take it 7-5 is incredible. Quite the young player.

Alcaraz defeats Jarry 6-3, 6-7 (6-8), 6-3, 7-5 in epic match

Alcaraz has done it! What a match and an incredibly strong performance from Jarry pushes the top seed all the way. Four points stands between Alcaraz and the last 16 but it is Jarry who gets the first point. Alcaraz gets the first of four next and a fantastic lob sees him two points away. But Jarry is not out yet and wins the next point from Alcaraz’ error. And wow, how about that under pressure! A huge forehand gives Jarry break point. Jarry can’t return Alcaraz serve and we are at deuce. Alcaraz has advantage and has match point, can he sew it up? Yes he can!

Lehecka beats Paul in five-set epic

Jiri Lehecka has caused a little upset as he knocks out seeded Tommy Paul. He won the first two sets 6-2 7-6 (7-2) but Paul fought back to take the next two sets 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (11-9). Lehecka won the final set 6-2 to take the victory.

Alcaraz breaks Jarry again to serve for the match! Alcaraz *6-3, 6-7 (6-8), 6-3, 6-5 Jarry (*denotes next server)

Oh hello 15-15 we meet again! A brilliant smash from Jarry sends the crowd to deafening cheers after a great rally. But the top seed is the next to take a point and so we are level again. Jarry gifts break point to Alcaraz as he forces a point long. And he does it, wow! What. A. Match!

Alcaraz 6-3, 6-7 (6-8), 6-3, 5-5 Jarry* (*denotes next server)

This match is going all the way isn’t it? Alcaraz wins the two points but Jarry manages to get himself in it, a break here would see him take the fourth. Alcaraz takes all the power out of the ball with a delightful drop shot to put him 40-15 up but then he makes an error to give Jarry a bit of hope. Alcaraz then sends a shot out to send the game to deuce! Alcaraz is quick to sew it up.

Alcaraz *6-3, 6-7 (6-8), 6-3, 4-5 Jarry (*denotes next server)

15-15 is back in action, you feel if Alcaraz can break here he could sew this up. An ace sees Jarry 30-15 up and a great forehand shot sees him a step away from holding! He does it and this match trundles on.

Alcaraz 6-3, 6-7 (6-8), 6-3, 4-4* Jarry (*denotes next server)

Jarry has an unforced error and a great shot from Alcaraz has the top seed 30-0 up – he could level the set here after being 3-0 down! A double fault from Alcaraz comes next but an error from Jarry sees Alcaraz a point away from holding and he does!

Alcaraz breaks back! Alcaraz *6-3, 6-7 (6-8), 6-3, 3-4 Jarry (*denotes next server)

Great skills from both players in a log rally which ends in Jarry’s backhand sending it out – Alcaraz shouts vamos with that point. The top seed takes the next point but forces a ball out to have a marginal 30-15 lead. Jarry hits the net and Alcaraz has break point – a massive moment in this match. He doesn’t take the break firstly with Jarry playing a great shot but he pushes a shot too far to gift Alcaraz the break.

Sabalenka has taken a dominant first set against Blinkova as she took it 6-2. She is aiming to have this wrapped up quickly and it would be hard to bet against her.

Jarry gets the first point on the board for this game but he cancels it out with an error. Another unforced error has Alcaraz 30-15 up and a great lob sees Jarry’s shot through his legs hit the net. Alcaraz challenges a call on his serve, he thinks it is in and it is! He takes the game.

Dart and Watson have lost their women’s doubles match despite winning the first set. The score stood at 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 to Mihalíková and Hrunčáková.

Alcaraz *6-3, 6-7 (6-8), 6-3, 1-4 Jarry (*denotes next server)

15-15 is the theme for most of these games and this one follows suit. A great forehand sees Jarry 30-15 up and again he reads play excellently to be a point away from holding. Two unforced Jarry errors sends the game to deuce, these two love a 40-40. Jarry gets the advantage and an ace sees him hold.

Alcaraz 6-3, 6-7 (6-8), 6-3, 1-3 Jarry* (*denotes next server)

An ace starts the match off for Alcaraz but an unforced error sees it 15-15. A double fault sees Jarry 30-15, could he break again here? Well he has break point with another error from the top seed. The momentum in this match keeps swinging! He doesn’t take the break point the first time of asking with a shot out and not the second time either – another error sends it to deuce. Alacaraz does enough to hold.

Huge from Paul! He has forced his match against Lehecka to a fifth set after taking the fourth 7-6 (9-11), what a match!

Eubanks has taken the second set over O’Connell 7-6 (7-3) and is now two sets up. Paul is currently fighting to stay in the match again in a tie break against Lehecka.

Alcaraz *6-3, 6-7 (6-8), 6-3, 0-3 Jarry (*denotes next server)

Both players have unforced errors to level it 15-15. Jarry plays a good ball which Alcaraz sends out in a match which is crucial to hold. And a great winner puts Jarry 40-15 up but a clever smash from Alcaraz brings him back into it. Another error from Jarry takes the game to deuce. The top seed gets an advantage but Jarry’s volley takes it back to deuce. The advantage goes the way of the Chilean but Alcaraz’ shot just bounces over the net – he apologies as Jarry crashes to the floor in attempt to hit it back! Deuce again. Jarry once more as the advantage but Alcaraz pulls it back, my word what a game this is! Alcaraz gets to another break point but an ace sees it back to deuce – the fifth of the game! Alcaraz sinks to his knees as he challenges a call and it doesn’t go his way, if he didn’t go for that challenge he could have hit that back. WE’RE AT DEUCE AGAIN – Alcaraz has a masterful play at the net. Jarry now has the advantage, can he see this out? Yes he can, a huge roar as he holds!

Rune is back underway, as is Paul, so the rain must have cleared up!

Aryna Sabalenka’s match against Anna Blinkova is underway on court 1 – that match will not have any disruptions as it has a roof on the court.

O’Connell and Eubanks are back underway after suspension but Rune’s match has not, neither Paul’s. Strange!

Jarry breaks early in fourth set! Alcaraz 6-3, 6-7 (6-8), 6-3, 0-2* Jarry (*denotes next server)

An unforced error from Jarry and a double fault from Alcaraz has the game 15-15. An error from Alcaraz now but an ace levels the game once more. Another double fault from the top seed gives Jarry break point and he gets it after a long rally! Wow.

Alcaraz *6-3, 6-7 (6-8), 6-3, 0-1 Jarry (*denotes next server)

A forehand is just out from Jarry but Alcaraz then has an error and it’s 15-15. The top seed hits the net and a ball is out to give Jarry 40-15 lead. An ace gives him the game!

Some outside court matches have been suspended, others not and so I am slightly bamboozled. Rune and Dart and Watson’s matches have been but Tsitsipas’ continues. Will bring you updates as they come.

Jarry’s first serve was called out but he challenged the call. It stood but he took his second serve which ended in an unforced error. The momentum has shifted now into Alcaraz’ favour. The score levels and then Alcaraz has an error. Jarry hit the roof, quite literally, with the next point and so it is replayed. He wins the next two to hold.

Davidovich Fokina has won the second set again Rune 6-4 after losing the first 6-3.

Alcaraz 6-3, 6-7 (6-8), 4-1* Jarry (*denotes next server)

Two aces start this game for Alcaraz and Jarry puts it out to see the top seed 40-0 up. He hits double fault though but follows it up with an ace to give him a good advantage in the third set.

Alcaraz breaks Jarry! Alcaraz *6-3, 6-7 (6-8), 3-1 Jarry (*denotes next server)

Jarry mishits a shot and Alcaraz has a huge forehand which whizzes past the Chilean to go 30-0 up. An unforced error from the top seed puts Jarry back into the game but Jarry gifts Alcaraz break point. And he is clinical in taking it!

Alcaraz 6-3, 6-7 (6-8), 2-1* Jarry (*denotes next server)

Fucsovics has continued his match against Medvedev after calling a medical time-out. The fourth set 3-2 in Medvedev’s favour.

Alcaraz 6-3, 6-7 (6-8), *1-1 Jarry (*denotes next server)

An unforced Jarry error starts this game but he takes the next point to level. Alcaraz challenges a call with Jarry’s shot called in but the decision is upheld. Jarry sends it out with the next point and it’s level once more. A great drop shot from Alcaraz gifts him break point – a huge moment. Jarry does well under pressure to hit a winner to take it to deuce but a cheap error gives Alcaraz the advantage and another break point. He can’t take it with a non-return and we’re back to deuce. Alcaraz has slipped trying to return a shot and silence engulfs the court as fans worry he can’t continue but he puts a thumbs up! He is okay but the slip gave Jarry the advantage. Jarry’s serve is called out but he challenges, it was out and we’re back to 40-40. Jarry gets advantage once again and sees it out.

Alcaraz 6-3, 6-7 (6-8), 1-0* Jarry (*denotes next server)

Into the third set then and the players exchange points with the game 15-15. Alcaraz forces another error but then has a double fault to see it 30-30 but Alcaraz sees it out.

An unreturnable serve from Alcaraz puts them 1-1. Alcaraz shouts in celebration with a powerful forehand making Jarry put in an unforced error – 2-1. And two aces puts Jarry 3-2 up. Alcaraz wins the next point to have this second set finely poised. Another unforced Jarry error has Alcaraz 4-3 up but the Spaniard makes two errors and Jarry is now 5-4 up. A lovely lob from Alcaraz levels the scoreboard again! This tie break is electric. And another great shot has him 6-4 up, set point. He can’t sew it up straight away with the score 6-6. Jarry gets the next point and with it set point

Alcaraz *6-3, 5-6 Jarry (*denotes next server)

An ace starts the game for Jarry and he does some acrobatics for the ball to go through his legs as Alcaraz hits the ball out. He has an unforced error though to see the game 30-15 but Alcaraz pops it out for Jarry to have a chance to hold. And he holds!

Alcaraz 6-3, 5-5 Jarry* (*denotes next server)

Alcaraz *6-3, 4-5 Jarry (*denotes next server)

Alcaraz is in a moment, that last game was his third game win in a row. He also wins the first point of this game but Jarry hits back with an ace. Alcaraz can’t return the next serve and an ace sees the Chilean 40-15 up. And he wraps it up quickly.

Alcaraz 6-3, 4-4 Jarry* (*denotes next server)

We have new balls ahead of this game. A powerful serve starts this game, it would be huge if Alcaraz could level this set after almost going two breaks down. He quickly gets to 40-0, will he have a clean game? He will! A lovely drop shot ends the game.

Alcaraz breaks back! *Alcaraz 6-3, 3-4 Jarry (*denotes next server)

Jarry pushes a shot out to give Alcaraz 15-0 but his backhand hits the net to level it. The Spaniard is shouting as his forehand hits the net, his frustration is clear – Jarry is putting him out of sorts. Jarry plays a great shot to be 40-15 but an unforced error gives Alcaraz a bit of hope here. Another error from Jarry sends it to deuce (again!). Jarry’s slice is called out and Alcaraz has break point but an non-return on the serve sees it back to 40-40. A phenomenal forehand shot from Jarry gives him advantage but he can’t follow it up and we’re back to deuce again! Alcaraz has break point once more and he takes it! A huge roar of celebration from the top seed.

Alcaraz *6-3, 1-4 Jarry (*denotes next server)

Jarry races to a 30-0 lead but Alcaraz pops a beautiful drop shot to get himself into the game. Jarry then smacks the net to level the game and he does it again! Alcaraz has break point and the Spaniard thought he had it with an out call. Jarry challenged the call and it is in! The umpire is not replaying the point, to Alcaraz’ frustration, and se we head to deuce. Alcaraz gets break point again with Jarry hitting the net but this time Alcaraz hits the net and it’s deuce once more. Alcaraz can’t return and Jarry has advantage – this would be a huge moment if he can hold. And he does it!

Alcaraz 6-3, 1-3 Jarry* (*denotes next server)

A superb rally ends with a volley from Alcaraz going out. Alcaraz’ serve does him well for the next two points but Jarry then sends a good forehand down the line with Alcaraz’ return hitting the net – 30-30. Jarry gets another break point as he attacks from the net and a backhand puts him 40-30. He doesn’t take it as he pushes his shot out, deuce we go. Alcaraz gets advantage and he takes the game under pressure!

Alcaraz *6-3, 0-3 Jarry (*denotes next server)

Jarry’s serve continues to be a thorn in Alcaraz’ side as he goes 30-0 up with non-returns from the top seed. A great forehand put the Chilean 40-0 and he wins the game!

Jarry breaks! Alcaraz 6-3, 0-2 Jarry* (*denotes next server)

An ace and a non-return from Jarry puts Alcaraz 30-0 up. Alcaraz challenges a call as his serve is called out, it is a matter of millimetres but it is out – second serve. Jarry wins the point with a powerful forehand. Alcaraz then pushes it long to level it 30-30. An ace puts the Spaniard 40-30 up but we are at deuce once again. Jarry has break point with a poor hit from Alcaraz hitting the net. And he gets it! What a moment.

44 minutes the first set lasted! Over on the other men’s singles, Medvedev is 5-3 up in the second set against Fucsovics.

Alcaraz takes first set 6-3 against Jarry

Alcaraz takes the first set despite a strong Jarry performance. Alcaraz wins the first point as Jarry’s shot it out but then pushes his own shot and it’s 15-15. The Spaniard wins the next point with another out call but Jarry does really well to level it 30-30. But Alcaraz has set point as Jarry hits the net. This time he isn’t clinical and hits the net to send the game to deuce. Jarry screams in frustration with his forehand smacking the net but he works well to send it back to deuce – popping the ball away from Alcaraz. Jarry has composed himself under this pressure and gives himself break point! He doesn’t take it though with Alcaraz saving his serve and gets advantage once again. This is his third set point and this time he takes it!

Alcaraz is so clinical, that was his first break point and he seals it. He performs well under pressure.

Alcaraz breaks and will serve for the first set! Alcaraz *5-3 Jarry (*denotes next server)

Jarry’s serve is working wonders for him at the moment, Alcaraz is finding it difficult to return them. And just as I type that he has a double fault, always the way! He puts my point back on track with an ace though to put him 30-15 up. We finally have a rally between the pair and Alcaraz comes out on top with Jarry pushing the ball out. An incredible rally ends with Alcaraz making a fist in celebration – the longest rally of the match so far gives Alcaraz break point. And he breaks!

Players are having a break here between games, I will take a huge sip of coffee and get ready to quick type for this incredible battle so far. Let me know your thoughts via Twitter or email.

Alcaraz 4-3* Jarry (*denotes next server)

Delightful from Alcaraz, Jarry comes close to the net and makes a great volley but Alcaraz goes for the lob and Jarry can’t get to it. The Spaniard plays a drop shot next and Jarry’s return hits the net – Alcaraz 30-0 up. He sends Jarry left and right and a huge forehand gets him to 40-0. He again can’t secure a perfect game though as he hits the net. Jarry’s return is then out.

Alcaraz *3-3 Jarry (*denotes next server)

Alcaraz can’t return the serve but then Jarry pushes a shot long. Jarry takes a lot of time before he serves, a little like Djokovic does. Alcaraz’ return on the serve is out and he can’t return it again! And Jarry takes it with another unreturnable serve.

Alcaraz 3-2* Jarry (*denotes next server)

Wow that is a great shot from Alcaraz. A powerful forehand pops in the right corner to win the opening point of the game. Jarry can’t return the serve and his drop shot doesn’t go over the net for the Spaniard to be 40-0 up. He does not take a clean game though as his smacks the net and he has too much on another shot to see Jarry back into the game. He hits the net again to bring the game to deuce, will we see the first break of the match here? No we won’t. Jarry hits the net and then he pushes a shot too far.

Alcaraz *2-2 Jarry (*denotes next server)

This time it is Alcaraz who attempts a drop shot but he hits the net. He then pushes the ball out giving Jarry 30-0. A great ace, right down the middle of the court, puts him 40-0 and a sensational forehand gives him the day.

Alcaraz 2-1* Jarry (*denotes next server)

An ace from Alcaraz starts the third game and Jarry hits the net to give the top seed 30-0. Alcaraz pushes a shot too long to let Jarry into the game but the Chilean tries to take the power out of the ball with a deft backhand but it hits the net. Jarry sends the ball out and Alcaraz wins the game.

Alcaraz *1-1 Jarry (*denotes next server)

A good start to the game from Jarry with a powerful serve gives him an ace but he pushes his return in a rally too far to level the game 15-15. Again Jarry’s return isn’t clinical and Alcaraz is 30-15 up. Jarry reads Alcaraz’ run well and sends the ball the other way for 30-30. The Spaniard can’t return a serve and Jarry’s return does not have enough power again to send the game to deuce. Jarry wraps it up cleanly.

Fucsovics served for the first set after an earlier break over Medvedev and he was clinical again! He takes it 6-4, if he goes all the way this could be an upset.

Alcaraz 1-0* Jarry (*denotes next server)

Jarry managed to get to a good position at 30-15 against serve but Alcaraz levelled with the ball hitting the net and bouncing in – he did apologise for the way the ball bounced. An ace saw Alcaraz 40-30 up but Jarry took the game to deuce. An ace gave Alcaraz the advantage but a great smash from Jarry levelled it out again. A well played ball from Alcaraz saw Jarry unable to get enough power on his return for advantage once more and a ball is out form Jarry! That’s the first game, wow what a match we are in for.

The centre court match is underway! Alcaraz to serve first
