Wilson rubbishes theory over second Newcastle goal and wants more game time with Isak

Callum Wilson insists he definitely meant to find the top corner when he netted his second and Newcastle United's third goal in the 4-1 rout over Everton. The Magpies No 9 was handed a starting spot over Alexander Isak and repaid Eddie Howe's faith with a Goodison Park brace.

The Newcastle striker was soon joined by his attacking co-star as Isak emerged from the bench in the second-half before an exquisite assist for Jacob Murphy to make it 4-1.

Wilson's first goal was a vintage, poacher's finish as the ex-Bournemouth man poked home a rebound after Jordan Pickford denied Joelinton. The second was completely different as Wilson curled a beauty into the top corner from the edge of the box, leaving the Everton stopper helpless.

"It was nice!" Wilson said about his second goal. "Everyone was saying I didn't mean it. I was practicing those yesterday to be honest and I didn't score a goal.

"Then today I put one in the top corner which is always nice and helped the team get the three points."

Wilson and Isak continue to battle it out for the solitary striking spot in Howe's first XI. The 31-year-old got the nod on Thursday evening but is still enjoying a partnership with the Swede, who will have felt aggrieved not to have started after scoring twice against Tottenham on Sunday.

Wilson is now hopeful of spending more time on the pitch with Isak between now and the end of the season. "He's a top player, top player," Wilson added.

"You want to play with good players. Unfortunately we play in the same position a lot of time but when he plays out wide he can do things like that as well.

"Obviously I'm more of a natural nine and he's more of a wide player and it's a good partnership. Hopefully we get more time on the pitch together.
