Willie Poching hails Lewis Murphy's "massive play" after Wakefield beat Warrington

Boss Willie Poching saluted young winger Lewis Murphy’s miracle tackle as Wakefield forced a dramatic late win against broken Warrington.

A seesaw game was level 24-24 when England star George Williams broke clear and sent Wolves flyer Connor Wrench surging to the line. But Murphy showed remarkable pace to somehow get back and drag his opposite man down in the 74th minute.

Jubilant Trinity then went ahead for the first time two minutes later. After Jacob Miller’s drop goal was charged down by Wolves debutant Thomas Mikaele, impressive second-row Kelepi Tanginoa blasted over to condemn Warrington to a fifth straight defeat.

Poching said: “That Lewis tackle to force the error was a massive play from a young kid. In the context of our game and our season it was huge. It was a massive confidence booster for him and indicative of the belief we’ve started to show.”

Makeshift centre James Batchelor (2), Matty Ashurst and Liam Hood scored Wakefield’s other converted tries as they backed up a golden point win over Hull. But error-ridden Warrington are in bits and drop to joint second-bottom with Trinity and Salford.

Wolves took the lead FOUR times with converted tries from Daryl Clark, Gareth Widdop, Wrench and Matty Ashton’s 95m intercept. But their hosts levelled up on each occasion after some shambolic defending.

Bewildered coach Daryl Powell hailed Murphy’s tackle as “world class” but admitted: “We’re nervous.

“Losing creates a nervousness as there is an expectation at this club.

“We are nervous. It’s clear to see. We can’t stick our head in the sand but we have to remain positive.”
