Willie Miller slams two Armenian 'assaults' with Scotland win talked up as Steve Clarke turning point

Willie Miller has slammed the "assault" on John McGinn during Scotland 's 4-1 win over Armenia.

And the Aberdeen hero also reckons Kamo Hovannisyan's late red-card challenge on Lewis Ferguson is worthy of the same branding.

The Scots finished off the international break with an ultimately comfortable win in Yerevan in the Nations League although it wasn't as straightforward as it seemed.

It certainly was not the perfect start, though, with the home side going one up through Vahan Bichakhchyan.

But a difficult opening for Steve Clarke 's side, Scotland turned it around with Stuart Armstrong netting his first of the night to level things up.

And after Arman Hovannisyan saw red after a mad few minutes that saw him wipe out Nathan Patterson and stick the head on John McGinn, Armstrong struck again to put the Scots in control.

McGinn and Che Adams both struck in the second half to seal a comfortable victory - although it was an awkward tie in more ways that one with Scotland's defence up against some tough critics.

Record Sport noted the key points raised this evening.

Willie Miller

"There were still concerns, mostly defensively.

"Defenders not doing what they should, not defending properly, not having the instinct for danger, not just keeping it simple and making sure first and foremost you are defending and stopping your opponents and allowing they far too many chances.

"It all turns round with the ordering off and the second goal.

"That is where it turns. It is a crucial time as well.

"It gives Steve Clarke something positive to speak about.

"It has been quite a difficult camp this time round, going out of the World Cup qualifying campaign and then having that disastrous performance against the Republic of Ireland.

"He had to get the result tonight, he got the result tonight so that business has been done."

Speaking about the two Armenia sending offs, Miller added. "The tackle on Lewis Ferguson was assault.

"The headbutt is an assault as well.

"If you make a motion like that towards an opponent, it has got to be a red card. He had lost it completely. "

Michael Stewart

"We're coming away from the game with no worries at all but to start with it wasn't great, it wasn't bright.

"We gifted the initiative to the Armenians at home.

"But we reacted quickly which was good. There were a lot of defensive concerns for Clarke, but from middle to front, there was a lot of positivity.

"In the end, we've won 4-1 away from home. All the negativity, which was quite rightly being talked about, can be forgotten about.

"The little bit of chat that started about Steve Clarke gets put to bed now.

"There's aspects of that game that you can't forget about and need to work on. But there's positivity now, we can move forward, and we're right in with a shout (of winning the Nations League group).

Alan Hutton

"It was a poor start but ultimately we got the result we were after.

"I can't believe the water bottle incident went unpunished. It was a poor tackle on Patterson, the reaction is terrible.

"You can't let someone away with that. As soon as you put your head in, it's a red card.

"I'm happy for McGinn. After the Ukraine game where he had a miss, he had a couple against Ireland too.

"He deserves that."

Kenny Miller

"It has been a tough break, with the two poor results, it was very important that we went to Armenia tonight and won.

"It is never easy in international football, travelling away from home and winning - particularly after the start we had.

"We were aided by the sending off and the timing of the second goal was crucial.

"But the way Armenia played, they were leaving themselves open.

"We were quite clinical with our opportunities and it is a big win.

"We've got to look at the positives."
