Willie Collum slated for Hibs vs Rangers display as former referee insists his time is up at top level

Willie Collum slated for Hibs vs Rangers display as former referee insists his time is up at top level

WILLIE COLLUM has been slated by two former referees who say his time at the top level of Scottish football is up.

The whistler sent off two players and awarded a penalty during Saturday's Premiership showdown between Hibs and Rangers.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst's team have since appealed John Lundstram's red card, while questions have been raised over a penalty call that was not given on James Tavernier.

Des Roache and Steve Conroy speaking to OLBG, said: "Willie Collum's performances are definitely an indication that he's getting towards the end. He's not at the top of his game anymore and he's probably getting through games on his management of it rather than the decisions.

"Like anything in life, your career is done on merit, so if you're getting decisions right and doing a good job then you deserve to be at the top. If you're not, then you don't deserve to be there.

"Willie Collum's performance was abject at best. He's been prone to being erratic throughout his refereeing career and he hasn't had the best start to the season at all.

"Nobody in the ground was looking for a red card for John Lundstram, he just took one for the team and it wasn't dangerous or violent. Doyle-Hayes committed the same foul and got a yellow card so now it's going to get to the stage where players and managers don't trust him.

"Collum is Scotland's most senior and most decorated referee right now so we shouldn't have to say anything to him but with an incident like the James Tavernier shirt pull, where the ball is, is irrelevant. There was enough contact there for Hibernian to be awarded a penalty. If he gives the penalty on Anthony Colack, then he has to give the one on Rocky Bashiri because there's far more contact."
