Williamson, Mead, Bright and Kirby among Arsenal and Chelsea stars key to England Euro 2022 win

England won a first European Championship trophy after beating Germany 2-1 with a number of Arsenal and Chelsea stars playing a key role.

Ella Toone opened the scoring for the Lionesses in the second half with a brilliant chipped finish before Germany equalised, sending the game to extra-time. Chloe Kelly then scored her first England goal with 10 minutes to play as England held on to win a first major trophy since 1966.

Plenty of Premier League stars reacted to the historic result including Aaron Ramsdale, Bukayo Saka, Emile Smith Rowe, Mason Mount and England men's captain Harry Kane. Whilst the entire squad involved in the tournament played their part, Arsenal and Chelsea stars had a major impact on how England performed throughout the competition in leading to the Lionesses lifting the Euro 2022 trophy.

England created history and won their first major women's tournament in a dramatic Euro 2022 final against fierce rivals and eight-time champions Germany at Wembley. Arsenal stars Leah Williamson, Beth Mead, Nikita Parris and Lotte Wubben-Moy, as well as Chelsea quartet Fran Kirby, Millie Bright, Jess Carter and Bethany England all featured in Sarina Wiegman's 28-player squad.

England captain and Arsenal defender Williamson partnered Bright at the heart of England's defence and proved to be rock solid all tournament, conceding just two goals in six matches. Beth Mead got the ball rolling for the Wiegman's side in the opening game of the competition, scoring the winner in a 1-0 victory against Austria at Old Trafford.

Mead was snubbed for the Team GB squad that took part in the Tokyo Olympic Games but showed her class in Euro 2022. The Arsenal superstar picked up both the Player of the Tournament award and Golden Boot after scoring an impressive six goals for the Lionesses, including a hat-trick against Norway.

Kirby was instrumental in midfield in every game, with Wiegman preserving her fitness throughout the tournament with smart substitutions that paid off, especially in the quarter-final win over Spain. Parris, Wubben-Moy, Carter and England all had to settle for squad roles but the Lionesses boss emphasised how everyone in the squad played their part in England's success.

Arsenal begin their Women's Super League campaign against Manchester City on Sunday, September 11. Chelsea are also in action as they take on West Ham in a London derby set to be played at Stamford Bridge.
