A phone tap played before the inquest into William Tyrell‘s disappearance and presumed death in 2014 heard his foster mother tell a friend that the missing three-year-old’s skeleton would be found “in 40 years”.
A coronial inquest into Tyrell’s disappearance kicked off again this week to further investigate the theory that he died accidentally and his foster mother — who cannot be named due to a suppression order — disposed of his body.
During the inquest, the foster mother was played a recording of a conversation she had with a friend in 2021 in which she spoke about the large-scale police operation which failed to find Tyrell’s body or more evidence. During the conversation, she said it “wasted millions and millions of dollars and… got nothing.”
“People are dying, people who might know are dying,” she said, per the Sydney Morning Herald.
She went on to say that his body would be discovered in “40 years when they are doing clearing”.
Police are investigating the theory that William Tyrell died after he fell from a balcony, and was deceased when he was found by his foster mother. The foster mother has always denied any wrongdoing.
According to Counsel Assisting Gerard Craddock SC, police believe that she may have moved Tyrell’s body in her car before calling Triple Zero. Despite the car and the place where police think Tyrell’s body was placed being forensically tested, no bones or clothing belonging to William were relocated.
William disappeared from his foster grandmother’s home in NSW in 2014. The case has gone on to become one of the highest-profile missing persons cases in Australia. Despite significant search efforts, no trace of the three-year-old has ever been found.
This is the fifth stage of the inquest into Tyrrell’s disappearance.
Nobody has ever been charged in relation to the case, and there is currently a million-dollar reward for any helpful information.
