William Saliba combined with centre-half partner Gabriel Magalhaes to form a solid rock in front of Aaron Ramsdale in the North London Derby. The Frenchman pocketed Harry Kane for much of the match and made it near-impossible for Spurs to launch their characteristic counterattacks.
Speaking after the game Saliba was asked for an update on his future. The Arsenal defender’s deal expires in 2024 after the Gunner activated an option to extend his contract by a further year to protect them from losing such a key asset.
He said: "I am so happy here. The club is speaking with my agent and me, the only thing I can do is [focus on my football]. I am so happy here."

Doubling down on his happiness at the club is sure to come as a relief to Arsenal supporters who have been concerned that the player would not be ready to commit for the long term. Interest from clubs around Europe has been noted and head of football operations Richard Garlick and sporting director Edu are in discussions with his agent and those of both Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli.
Mikel Arteta had his initial doubts about Saliba, sending him on loan twice to Nice and Marseille in Ligue 1 to the frustration of the young defender. However, the now 21-year-old flourished whilst away and gave Arteta no choice but to integrate him into the side this season.
Saliba’s speed has come in very handy at the back and helped in the derby win which he celebrated wildly at full-time with his teammates. Asked if victories like this help him make up his mind he said: "Yeah, of course!"
Now it will be down to the club to finish the January transfer window strongly before returning their focus to renewing the likes of Saliba’s contracts. The club have been distracted by the need to strengthen which has somewhat shelved talks with Saliba, Saka and Martinelli for this brief moment.
