William Saliba gives Arsenal Premier League title verdict as Man City gap out to seven points

Arsenal defender William Saliba has revealed his aim for the end of the 2022/23 campaign and Gunners fans will love it. Mikel Arteta has led his players to the top of the Premier League table heading into the new year as they prepare to face Newcastle next.

Saliba returned to the Emirates Stadium last summer after spending his first three seasons as an Arsenal player out on loan. The French defender spent last term on-loan at Marseille, winning the Ligue 1 Young Player of the Year award, before carrying on his brilliant form into his first full season with the Gunners.

The 21-year-old's form this season saw him earn a place in Didier Deschamps France World Cup squad as Les Bleus finished as runners-up to Argentina, unable to retain their crown as world champions. Saliba has become one of the best defenders in the English top-flight, with Ben White adapting to his new role at right-back brilliantly to accommodate the Frenchman in Arsenal's defence.

Arsenal have triggered the clause in Saliba's contract to extend his current deal until June 2024, football.london understands. With French giants Paris-Saint Germain reportedly monitoring the defender's development in England, football.london also understands that talks are progressing well over a fresh deal in an attempt to secure Saliba's services for the long-term.

As the Gunners continue to embark on a potentially historic season, the 21-year-old has laid out his aims for the remainder of the season with Arsenal. Speaking to French outlet Canal+, Saliba said: "One must dream of the Premier League title, we play for that."

The French defender is one of the first Arsenal players to openly admit they are targeting a Premier League title win this season. The players are right to dream of lifting the Gunners first league title since 2004 given how well they are playing and the confidence gained from each win cements their title credentials further.

Arsenal have lost just one game all season and given City's latest slip-up, a seven point lead at this stage of the season is a huge advantage. The north London outfit know there is still a long way to go, but Saliba's performances have been a major factor in helping them stay at the top of the table.
