William Gallas tells Chelsea fans to blame Todd Boehly not Graham Potter if Champions League bid fails

New era: Graham Potter is Todd Boehly’s first Chelsea appointment

Former Chelsea defender William Gallas believes co-owner Todd Boehly would be to blame if the club do not finish inside the Premier League’s top four.

In the first season of the post-Roman Abramovich era, Chelsea sit eighth and eight points off the Champions League places.

That is despite a record-breaking summer spend at Stamford Bridge, with the Blues’ Boehly-Clearlake Capital ownership willing to invest again in January.

Graham Potter has been installed as the club’s new manager following the decision to sack Thomas Tuchel in September and the former Brighton boss has overhauled the coaching staff.

There have been other key appointments behind the scenes in a total restructure, with the owners implementing a ‘transfer think tank’ to oversee player recruitment.

Still, it has been a difficult campaign thus far despite a strong star under Potter and Chelsea ended the first half of the season with three consecutive League defeats.

Gallas, however, believes the finger must be pointed at Boehly should they not make the top four.

The former defender told Genting Casino: “If Chelsea don’t finish in the top four, Todd Boehly would have failed. There can be no excuses for a club like Chelsea finishing outside of the top four.

“We are always very quick to judge players on their performance and it should be the same for the owner. He arrived and spent a lot of money, but if he doesn’t qualify for the top four he would have failed."
