Kate Middleton's beloved dog Orla has precious meaning to royal family

It's well-known that dogs have a special place in the royal family, and it seems beloved dog Orla is no different.

The young black cocker spaniel is extremely precious to the Cambridge's as Kate and William received her as a generous gift from her brother.

James Middleton, who has bred dogs since 2011, gave the Duchess of Cambridge the eight-month-old puppy as a present almost two years ago.

It was hoped that a young pup would give their nine-year-old senior dog Lupo some company and a zest for life, but sadly he passed away shortly after.

In November 2020, William and Kate shared the devastating news of Lupo's death in a rare personal message on social media.

They wrote at the time: "Very sadly last weekend our dear dog, Lupo, passed away. He has been at the heart of our family for the past nine years and we will miss him so much."

The Duke and Duchess did not reveal a cause of death.

Prince George, eight, and Princess Charlotte, seven, are understood to have specially helped pick Orla from the litter of puppies.

The adorable cocker spaniel also appeared in the first official family photo after Prince George was born.

Just this week, the Duchess of Cambridge and Orla were seen joining Prince William as he took part in the annual Royal Charity Polo Cup.

Kate was spotted arriving with her husband and the black spaniel, whilst wearing a white Emilia Wickstead dress with black detailing down the front.

Later, she was seen giving Orla a stroke on the head as she enjoyed a glass of Pimms in the summer sunshine.

Orla walked alongside Kate and William at various points in the match, and appeared to be very well trained as she remained off the lead for most of the day.

The Royal Family have long been known to be dog lovers, with the Queen having owned several corgis throughout her reign.

The 95-year-old monarch's love for corgis began during her childhood after her father King George VI brought home a Pembroke Welsh corgi puppy for the Royal Family.
