Will Young ‘honoured and proud’ to make Channel 4 documentary about twin brother’s death

Will Young has announced that he has made a documentary about the heartbreaking loss of his twin brother for Channel 4.

Will told followers on Twitter: “I’m very honoured and proud to tell my brother Rupert’s story”. The singer tragically lost his brother Rupert to suicide in 2020.

The singer explained that the experience of making the film was “enlightening and emotional”, BirminghamLive reports . “I hope it shines a light on the difficulties that so many people face today in the UK with addiction and getting the necessary help,” he said.

Rupert Young was 41 when he died after jumping from Westminster Bridge, following a battle with alcoholism and depression.

Speaking outside the court at the inquest into his brother’s death, Will said he believes his brother should have been seen by a psychiatrist and sectioned under the Mental Health Act.

He said: "Those working for the NHS do an amazing job and within very difficult circumstances and it’s never been more hard-pressed than at the moment.

"However my brother is someone who had, in the weeks and months before his death, been into hospital countless times following suicide attempts.

“I am astounded that Rupert, having been found trying to jump off Westminster Bridge on July 28, was allowed to leave hospital two days later yet again, without ever having been referred to a consultant psychiatrist.

"It is my belief that it must or should have been obvious to all concerned that he was a high risk of suicide and should have been detained under the Mental Health Act for his own safety. Had this been done he might still be alive today.

“I know we are not the only family in this situation and I pray that lessons are learned from his situation and some of these deaths are prevented in the future."

The hour-long documentary special, Will Young: Losing my Twin Rupert, is set to air on Channel 4 on 10 May at 10pm.
