I've been lucky, for the most part, that my helmets fit me well. But like I said, that's for the most part, I did have one helmet that fitted particularly poorly and eventually began to flop around in the air while still being too tight in areas. It was a nightmare, quite dangerous, and made me realize how important knowing what shape of helmet you need as well as the size.
Well, SHOEI appears to be at the heart of the evolution of helmet fitting thanks to the introduction of the PFS 3D scanner as the latest measurement technology for its Personal Fitting System (PFS). This technology means that riders aren't completely out of look if they don't have an intermediate oval-shaped head, etc, as SHOEI can change the internal shape of the helmet to fit your head.
Before the introduction of the 3D scanner, if you wanted to avail of SHOEI's PFS, you needed to have your head manually measured by head tape. Whereas now, customers just sit with their heads in a measuring device, and the sensor measures the exact size of their heads in a few seconds. This method makes the measurements even more precise than when using the previous method.
Of course, the benefit of this system is obvious in that it should provide an even better-fitting helmet than you've ever experienced. But it goes beyond that.
So many riders are unable to buy certain brands or models from certain brands because the helmet only comes with an internal size that doesn't fit their head. Using SHOEI's new system, you can buy any product from its lineup, and, not only will it fit, but it'll probably fit better than any other helmet you've ever worn. There's just one problem.
Right now, the new PFS system is only launching in Japan and there's no information regarding whether it'll come to the US or other parts of the world. So if this is something you'd make use of, let your voices be heard in the comments and give SHOEI a push to bring this technology stateside.
