Will there be fireworks in Nottingham on New Year's Eve?

There's scores of ways to ring in 2023 across Nottingham. Drinks will be flowing, there's fine food to be eaten, dancing of course, party poppers and, at one bar, samba dancers and fire breathers.

But the New Year won't start with a bang - at least not with a public firework display. Last year the annual fireworks display at Nottingham Castle was axed due to council spending cuts. This year, not only do the financial restrictions continue, the castle grounds are closed due to it going into liquidation.

There were no fireworks in 2020 due to the Covid pandemic and the city being under Tier 4 restrictions. Previously a spectacular free firework display took place after the clock in Old Market Square struck midnight following an evening of entertainment including live music, fire jugglers, stalls and bars.

There was even a children's firework display at 9.15pm before the main event, which used to attract 2,000 in the castle grounds, plus many more watching in Old Market Square. When Nottingham Castle closed for renovations the display switched to Old Market Square in 2019. If there are any fireworks this year it will be at private events.
