Will there be a third season of House of the Dragon? Here's what we know

Season two isn’t even over yet, and we’ve already been wondering about season three of House of the Dragon.

Well, good news: it’s happening!

The show, which acts as a prequel of sorts to the Game of Thrones series, follows the events of the Dance of Dragons – the civil war among the ruling Targaryen family.

The main parties in this epic duel are Team Black, which is led by Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) and her family. They’re facing off against Team Green – comprised of her once-childhood best friend Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke) and her children by Rhaenyra’s father Viserys.

Both factions have dragons on their side, and as season two has progressed we’ve seen them put to use with devastating effect.

When was the news announced?

Season three was renewed shortly before the season two premiere in June, which means more drama, more dragons and almost certainly many more deaths to come.

"George, Ryan, and the rest of our incredible executive producers, cast, and crew, have reached new heights with the phenomenal second season of House of the Dragon," Francesca Orsi, executive vice president of HBO’s Programming, said.

"We are in awe of the dragon-sized effort the entire team has put into the creation of a spectacular season two, with a scope and scale that is only rivaled by its heart. We could not be more thrilled to continue the story of House Targaryen and watch this team burn bright again for season three."

When will it be airing?

Who knows? It took two years between season one coming out and season two following, and given the huge amount of CGI needed to even make the show (adding dragons to almost every scene ain’t cheap or fast), we could well be waiting some time for the next.

What will it be about?

While the plot details of season three haven’t yet been announced (after all, season two hasn’t even finished airing yet), the show is sure to follow the events of George RR Martin’s Fire & Blood, which is a complete retelling of the events of the Targaryen civil war (no spoilers here).

That civil war, according to Martin, lasted three years. Given that the first season took place over a decade, and the second seemingly over a series of weeks, there’s clearly a lot more to get through.
