Will the Texans’ new coach emerge after the NFC Championship Game?

It seems pretty apparent that the results of conference championship Sunday will reveal more of where the Houston Texans are heading in their coaching search.

Texans chairman and CEO Cal McNair provided comments about the club’s search for their sixth full-time coach in history while at the Houston Sports Awards on Wednesday evening.

“There are a lot of rules we follow with the NFL,” McNair said via Aaron Wilson of KPRC-TV. “There are some guys still playing we can’t be talking to right now and we’ll talk to them at the appropriate time and all of that will come together and we’ll come out with a great selection.”

“Some of the guys” that are still active in the playoffs are San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans and Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon. Their respective clubs face off in the NFC Championship Game at Lincoln Financial Field.

Starting Jan. 30, the Texans will be able to speak with the losing defensive coordinator that week. The Texans can also have a second interview with the winning defensive coordinator, whether in-person or virtually, no later than Feb. 5. Super Bowl LVII is Feb. 12 in Glendale, Arizona.

Regardless of who wins the NFC title game, it may start to become clearer as to whom the Texans want for their coaching vacancy.
