Will The Pittsburgh Steelers Fire Head Coach Mike Tomlin?

After another disappointing end to the season, the debate over whether the Pittsburgh Steelers should keep head coach Mike Tomlin has intensified online, especially among fans. Will the Steelers fire Tomlin?

Mike Tomlin Discusses His Job Security

Is it time for a new voice in Pittsburgh? Tomlin doesn’t think so, believing he is still the right head coach for the organization. However, Tomlin is uninterested in responding to the fans calling for his job.

“I have no response to that,” Tomlin told reporters on Tuesday (via Ashley Liotus). “I understand the nature of what it is that we do. The attention and criticism that comes with that. As a matter of fact, I embrace it. I enjoy the urgency that comes with what I do and what we do.

“I don’t make excuses for failure. I own it. But I also feel like I’m capable, and so as long as I’m afforded an opportunity to do that, I will continue, but I certainly understand their frustrations, and probably more importantly than that, I share it because that’s how I’m wired.”

Pittsburgh has not shown any indication that they plan to move on from Tomlin this offseason. When asked about teams calling the Steelers to express a trade for his services, Tomlin told those organizations to “save your time.”

Tomlin signed a three-year extension last offseason.

Tomlin has a 183-107-2 head coaching record in 18 seasons with the Steelers. Famously, Tomlin has never finished a season with a record below .500.

Tomlin’s teams have struggled in the postseason over the last decade. The Steelers have been one-and-done in five consecutive postseason appearances dating back to the 2017 season. The Steelers’ last playoff win came in the 2017 Divisional Round against the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Steelers have only won three playoff games since Tomlin led Pittsburgh to a Super Bowl victory during the 2010 season.

Where Do The Steelers Go From Here?

After starting the 2024 season with a 10-3 record, the Steelers lost four consecutive games to end the regular season, followed by a 28-14 defeat at the hands of the Baltimore Ravens in the Wild Card Round.

Pittsburgh will have to decide on the future of their quarterback room. Russell Wilson and Justin Fields are set to become free agents this offseason. Fields led the Steelers to a 4-2 record before Wilson took over and went 6-6.

The Steelers signed former Miami Dolphins quarterback Skylar Thompson on Tuesday.
