How will British national anthem change after Queen Elizabeth II dies aged 96?

Queen Elizabeth II passed away earlier this evening aged 96 at Balmoral Castle in Aberdeenshire.

The news has sent the whole of the United Kingdom into a dark period of mourning, while her funeral arrangements are put in place and subsequently carried out.

The longest-ever reigning monarch, Queen Elizabeth II succeeded the throne in 1952 following her father George IV's sudden passing.

And with the passing of the monarch, who recently celebrated her coveted platinum jubilee - marking 70 years in state - many changes will come to the United Kingdom. New cash and coins will be created bearing the image of King Charles III, with stamps also being created in his image.

But it's not just physical changes that will come into effect. Take the national anthem of the UK for example, God Save the Queen.

God Save the Queen will now be reverted back to the previous anthem in God Save the King - which holds the exact same lyrics, but with the words and pronouns changed to the male version.

The last time this version of the national anthem was used was in 1952, when Queen Elizabeth II's father was on the throne.

Here are the full lyrics to the amended national anthem:

God save our gracious king
Long live our noble king
God save the king

Send him victorious
Happy and glorious
Long to reign over us
God save the king

Thy choicest gifts in store
On him be pleased to pour
Long may he reign
May he defend our laws
And ever give us cause
To sing with heart and voice
God save the king

The National Anthem will now change following the death of Queen Elizabeth II (PA)

God save our gracious king
Long live our noble king
God save the king

Send him victorious
Happy and glorious
Long to reign over us
God save the king
