Will the Broncos play their starters in preseason finale?

After playing his starters in each of the Denver Broncos’ first two preseason games, head coach Sean Payton might take a different approach in the team’s preseason finale against the Los Angeles Rams on Saturday.

“We’ll see,” Payton said Tuesday. “We certainly won’t play them — if we do — more than a series. There’ll be a number of guys that don’t play, but we do get this additional work, which is helpful, particularly with some of those guys that may not play because we just hold them back.”

The “additional work” that Payton referenced was the two joint practices the Broncos held with the Rams this week. Although it wasn’t a live game setting, those practices were good opportunities for Denver’s starters to get reps against Los Angeles’ starters.

After their preseason finale on Saturday, the Broncos will have until Tuesday (Aug. 29) to finalize a 53-man roster.

“There’s still some competition in positions that are undecided,” Payton said. “I think this week will be important for some of those spots. We’ll kind of take it by what we see. There will be a lot of meetings and a lot of discussions with this roster in the next two weeks.”

Saturday’s game will likely feature players on the roster bubble.
