Chris Rock isn't the first person to be on the receiving end of a smack from Will Smith.
There was controversy during Sunday night's Oscars when Will stormed on stage after his wife Jada Pinkett Smith was mocked by the comedian.
Jade, who has alopecia, looked visibly upset when Chris joked he was excited to see her in GI Jane 2, a film in which Demi Moore shaved her head for the role.
Wanting to stand up for his wife, Will marched towards Rock and gave him a smack across the face before returning to his seat and shouting: "Keep my wife's name out your f***ing mouth."
There was a similar incident a decade ago when a Ukrainian prankster tried to kiss the Fresh Prince star on the face at the Russian premiere of Men In Black 3 in May 2012.
While Will was stopping to chat to reporters on the red carpet, Vitalii Sediuk jumped up and grabbed Will, who managed to avoid the full-on mouth kiss twice by moving his face.

After the second lunge, an understandably frustrated Will pushed Sediuk back and slapped his face.
Before walking away, Will shouted: "Hey man, what is your problem?"
The A-lister laughed about the incident later, telling another reporter: "He tried to kiss me on the mouth. He's lucky I didn't try to sucker punch him. Sorry, I said that on camera."
The Ukrainian prankster, who has since gone on to target Adele, Bradley Cooper, Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Kim Kardashian twice, later apologised for his actions.
"I apologise for my behaviour... I think it was too much. I just wanted to do something extraordinary to impress him," he said, adding that if he saw Will again he would "just shake his hand" instead.
Speaking on the Late Show With David Letterman in the days after, Will laughed off the "awkward" encounter.
Will told the host: "I didn't beat up a guy! We're doing an interview and he says, 'I'm your biggest fan, can I have a hug?'
"So I go to give this joker a hug, and he tries to lean in and kiss me! It's just awkward."
After giving a run down of exactly what happened, the 53-year-old actor then made a joke about the incident.
Will continued: "The [red carpet officials] were saying, 'We're sorry, that's just his schtick'.
"Well that's why his ass got schtuck."
It's not just slaps, as a fellow Hollywood actor once got 'accidentally' punched by Will.
In January last year, Marvel actor Anthony Mackie said that he bumped into the I Am Legend star at a party in Budapest.
Explaining what happened on The Jess Cagle Show, he said: "I’m on stage with Will Smith doing a concert. I’m losing my mind. Right?
"So the cake comes out, we bring the cake out, Will Smith sees me and he goes, ‘Hey, Anthony Mackie.’ I’m like, ‘Will Smith knows my name.’"
Anthony, who plays Sam Wilson aka Falcon, went on to say there was a miscommunication and he ended up getting punched in the jaw.
He continued: "So, I go to like high five. I don’t know what I was trying to do, but like I was trying to hug him and he thought I was coming in for like a high five.
"So, he like tried to grab my arm and he punched me in the jaw so hard. Like he hit me with a right cross so hard."
"Then he grabbed me and he’s like, ‘you’re good?’ I was like, ‘I think so. I think we’re in a fight, are we in a fight?’ He’s like, ‘no, no, I’m sorry.’"
While that incident ended in smiles, it certainly wasn't the case when Chris Rock got slapped at the Oscars.
Some praised Will for defending his wife's honour, while others told him his reaction was uncalled for and violence is never the answer.
On an Instagram snap with wife Jada, Will seemed to suggest that he wasn't taking the whole thing too seriously by commenting: "You can’t invite people from Philly or Baltimore nowhere!!"
This was in reference to his hometown of Philadelphia and Jada's hometown of Baltimore.
Will got very emotional during his acceptance speech for Best Actor, where he started by comparing himself to his character in King Richard - the father of tennis legends Venus and Serena Williams.
Seemingly addressing the controversial incident with Rock, he said: "I know to do what we do, you gotta be able to take abuse, and you gotta be able to have people talk crazy about you. In this business.
"You gotta be able to have people disrespecting you and you gotta smile and you gotta pretend like that‘s Ok."
He also revealed that Denzel Washington, who consoled him during an ad break, told him: "Be careful at your highest moment… that's when the devil comes for you."
Will apologised to the Academy and his fellow nominees before paying tribute to his mother and family.
He added: "This is a beautiful moment and I'm not crying for winning an award, it's not about winning an award for me, it's about being able to shine a light on all of the people.
"Art imitates life, I look like the crazy father, just like they said about Richard Williams, but love will make you do crazy things."
