Actor Will Smith has been given a 10-year ban from the Oscars after slapping Chris Rock at this year's event. In a meeting held on Friday, April 8, the Academy decided that the ban will take effect from the current date and Mr Smith will not be allowed to attend any events during that time - in person or virtually.
Will, 53, was not impressed with a joke Chris made about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith and her alopecia and told him to "keep my wife's name out of your fu**ing mouth". Days later, Will resigned from the Academy and according to one member, the 54 board members - 25 of whom are female - were "almost entirely split" ahead of the hearing.
AMPAS president David Rubin and CEO Dawn Hudson, in a letter sent to Academy members, said: “The Board has decided, for a period of 10 years from April 8, 2022, Mr Smith shall not be permitted to attend any Academy events or programs, in person or virtually, including but not limited to the Academy Awards."
The slap instantly became viral, after taking place with millions watching the star-studded event around the world. He went on to apologise in his acceptance speech after winning the 'Best Actor' category later in the night.
