'Will lose it' - Manchester United fans react to Liverpool FC transfer move for Cody Gakpo

Manchester United supporters have mixed feelings over Cody Gakpo looking set to sign for Liverpool FC despite long-standing interest from Old Trafford.

Gakpo, 23, has earned rave reviews for his performances this season, and he took that form to the World Cup with three goals in five appearances there. Before that, the Netherlands international had netted 15 goals - and provided 18 assists - from 29 early-season matches for PSV in all competitions.

Erik ten Hag wanted to sign Gakpo in the summer, but instead opted to recruit Antony from Ajax at that stage. He remained on the radar at Old Trafford going into the January window, as well, but PSV confirmed tonight that they have reached agreement with Liverpool over his transfer.

As per an update on social media, the Eindhoven club say the player "will leave for England imminently where he will be subjected to the necessary formalities ahead of the completion of the transfer".

Our sister publication Liverpool Echo are reporting that Gakpo became the primary target for Jurgen Klopp as he looked to bolster his ranks with injuries to forwards Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota, who are expected to be unavailable until March and February respectively. Interest from United and others is, also, said to have accelerated their move.

Addressing Gakpo's future, PSV manager and United hero Ruud van Nistelrooy said: "If I had the choice, I prefer the summer, but it can also be now. There comes a time when you can't say no."

After watching tonight's update filter through on social media, United supporters served up varied reaction as demands were made to the board to step up and match what Liverpool have done. However, others argue that Gakpo is not the striker they need to replace the now-departed Cristiano Ronaldo next month.
