Will Lionel Messi be fit for the World Cup? Injury latest after PSG scare for Argentina

Lionel Messi suffered an injury scare just a fortnight before the World Cup in Qatar, with the 35-year-old unable to feature in PSG's Ligue 1 clash with Lorient on Sunday.

The club confirmed that Messi is suffering with an inflamed Achilles tendon but expect the injury to only be a minor one, as the Argentinian prepares for his fifth, and final World Cup.

When is Messi expected to return to action?

PSG are expecting Messi to return to training ahead of their fixture against Auxerre next weekend, their final match before the tournament starts on November 20th.

But the new fitness concern is the latest injury he has had to endure this season, missing two games due to a calf strain and then was spotted limping against Maccabi Haifa - leaving many Argentina fans with their hearts in their mouths.

The forward, who has 12 goals and 14 assists for PSG in all competitions this season, was able to play the full 90 minutes of PSG's final Champions League group game away at Juventus on Wednesday.

What Messi has said

But after seeing pals Paulo Dybala and Angel Di Maria suffering injuries just before the tournament, the seven-time Ballono d'Or winner is understandably cautious.

He said last month: “Injuries are a worry. This is a different World Cup which is played at a different time of the year to previous tournaments and it’s so imminent any little thing that happens to you can force you out.

“With what happened to Dybala and Di Maria, the truth is that personally you worry and you’re more afraid when you see those sorts of things.

“It’s something you think about, but I feel going out to play with that in your head can be contradictory as well.

“The best thing you can do is perform as normal and play your game as you always do. I hope Di Maria and Dybala recover in time. They have enough time to do so and reach the tournament in good shape.”

When is Argentina's first World Cup game?

Argentina kick off their World Cup campaign on November 22nd against Saudi Arabia and also face Mexico and Poland in their group.

With Messi confirming that the tournament in Qatar will be his last World Cup, he could finally obtain the one accolade he has failed to achieve in his trophy-laden career, and the final could be his 1000th professional match of his career.
