Will Lankshear breaks silence on red card against Galatasaray with message to Tottenham fans

Tottenham striker Will Lankshear has taken to Instagram to both thank and apologise to the club’s fans after scoring his first goal for the club before being sent off in Thursday’s loss to Galatasaray.

The 19-year-old equalised with a smart finish in the 18th minute, but was sent for an early bath just after the hour mark for a second yellow. Lankshear’s dismissal came while Spurs were trailing 3-1 and struggling to get back into the game, with his desperation evident in his tackle.

Lankshear posted: “Firstly I’d like to apologise for letting my teammates and the fans down yesterday, I will learn from this experience and I am determined to keep on working hard and improving my game.

“On a more positive note, yesterday I scored my first professional goal which I have been dreaming about as a little boy, I wanted to thank everyone who has helped me along my journey and hopefully this is the first of many for Tottenham.

“A massive thank you to all the travelling fans who came out yesterday to support. On to the next game.”

Ange Postecoglou said the striker “would have learnt a lot” from the raucous experience in Istanbul, adding: “Yes, look Will took his goal well, he worked hard for the team” and “the red card, it was a bit of over-enthusiasm in that moment to give away a foul, but he’ll learn from that.”

Lankshear is likely to be on the bench for his side’s Premier League clash with Ipswich Town on Sunday, with Dominic Solanke set to return to the starting lineup.
