Wilfried Gnonto says 'stick together' mentality will help Leeds United after Manchester United draw

Wilfried Gnonto has said that Leeds United's 'stick together' mentality will help them through this tough period for the club after his opening goal against Manchester United helped the Whites take a point away from Old Trafford.

Following the sacking of manager Jesse Marsch on Monday afternoon, the coaching trio of Chris Armas, Michael Skubala and Paco Gallardo have temporarily taken over the Elland Road dugout but things looked positive straight away for Leeds.

It took all of 56 seconds for Gnonto to find the back of the net, a great one-two pass with Patrick Bamford saw him fire the ball past David de Gea to give the Whites the lead.

Crysencio Summerville, who had come on for the injured Luis Sinisterra, made it 2-0 just three minutes after halftime when his cross bounced off United defender Raphael Varane and into the goal.

However, sadly for Leeds, they were unable to hang on for all three points as Marcus Rashford's header on the hour mark was followed up eight minutes later by a nice Jadon Sancho finish which saw the game end 2-2.

"Yeah, it's mixed emotions," Gnonto told LUTV after the draw. "I think we had a really good game, we tried to stick together, fight together and I think we've proved that we have a top team that can play against anyone, and we can win against anyone.

"It's a little bit of a mix of emotions because we nearly won, and we thought we could win, but we'll go again on Sunday and try to win."

The 19-year-old highlighted the fast nature of Leeds' opening goal, and admitted that they always want to play off the front foot from the get-go.

"We always want to start the game well because we want to show the opponent that we're there, that we want to win, and we tried to do that today. Of course, it went pretty well but we concede two goals at the end and it's a little bit of a shame but it's ok, we'll go again."

When asked if they'd gone into the game with a different gameplan to how Marsch would've set them up, Gnonto was hesitant to answer but quickly reaffirmed that they simply played for each other.

"I don't really know, to be honest. When we go into a game, we just try to do our best and sometimes we achieve it, sometimes we don't. I don't think we did something differently.

"We just tried to stick together, we talk with each other, we want to fight for each other and I think we showed that today. I think today was a positive game because it shows we have character.

"To me, that's the most important thing so from now on, we have to show our character in the game and show we can beat anyone, show that we have a lot of quality in the team and just try to win every game."
