Wildcats sign former rival Corey Webster

The Perth Wildcats have signed Corey Webster five years after the three-time NBL Championship winner walked out on the club without playing a game.

Webster has joined the Wildcats on a two-year deal, which includes a mutual option at the conclusion of the 2022/23 NBL season.

The 33-year-old has spent his entire NBL career at the NZ Breakers, sprinkled with some short stints overseas.

Webster's most recent appearance for the Breakers came in 2021 and he sits fourth on the club's all-time scoring list with 2664 points from 236 games.

The shooting guard first signed with the Wildcats in 2017, only to renege on the deal months later without playing a game in a bid to pursue overseas options.

But the Wildcats finally have their man with Webster set to form a key partnership with Bryce Cotton as Perth attempt to make up for missing the finals for the first time since 1986.

"I feel honoured to be recruited by a club like Perth," Webster said.

"Everybody knows their history and the success they've had in the NBL, so to be wanted by a team like that is an honour for me and I'm very grateful.

"I also have a lot of history against Perth in the league, so I think I'll be quite familiar with the winning standard that they have over there and I'm very excited to join the team and hopefully push for a Championship."

The Wildcats and Breakers had one of the NBL's most intense rivalries during Webster's time at New Zealand.

The Breakers won a hat-trick of titles between 2011-13, with two of those grand final victories coming over the Wildcats.

Perth got their revenge by beating the Breakers in the 2016 grand final series.

On the international stage, Webster has represented New Zealand on 92 occasions, leading the Tall Blacks with 22.8 points, 4.6 rebounds and 5.6 assists per game at the 2019 FIBA World Cup in China.

Webster also played six games in the NBA Summer League for the Dallas Mavericks in 2018 and has played professionally overseas in Egypt, Serbia, Italy, Greece, Israel and China.

"Corey is an excellent fit with our line-up as we searched to add a versatile guard who can both play-make for others as well as get his own bucket," Wildcats coach Scott Morrison said.

"Not only does he bring an element of instant offence but also a championship resume from his time with the Breakers."
