Wigan Council cancels Coronation party due to weather forecast and safety concerns

Wigan Council has announced its Coronation event on Bank Holiday Monday will be cancelled due to the weather forecast.

The event was due to be held in Mesnes Park today to celebrate the crowning of the new King and Queen. Following on from the Big Coronation Lunch event held in Leigh yesterday, the Coronation party was set to be full of entertainment, food and drink and family-friendly activities.

But in a post on social media at around 5pm last night, council bosses said the event had to be cancelled due to 'forecasted persistent and heavy rain'. They said the weather will 'cause a challenging and potentially unsafe event environment'.

According to the Met Office, heavy rain is set to fall in Wigan until at least 4pm, with lighter showers forecast into the evening. In full, the Wigan Council statement said: "After a brilliant celebration in Leigh today, we are sorry to announce the cancellation of tomorrow's (Monday, May 8) Coronation event in Mesnes Park, Wigan.

"This cancelled is due to forecasted persistent and heavy rain which will cause a challenging and potentially unsafe event environment. We are sorry for any disappointment caused.

"Our next event will be Armed Forces Day in Wigan town centre on Saturday, June 24, which we hope you will join us for."

This cancellation followed a weekend full of celebrations across our region to celebrate the crowning of King Charles and Queen Camilla. Streets could be seen adorned in bunting and Union Jacks as many raised a glass to the Royals and took part in The Big Coronation Lunch.

Events took place in all corners of the city-region including at Leigh Town Hall, Nuttall Park in Ramsbottom and in Romiley in Stockport. In Romiley, cardboard cut-outs of the newly-crowned King and Queen were on display, alongside other members of the Royal family.

In a message posted on the Royal Family's official Instagram account, the King and Queen said they hoped it would be a 'truly enjoyable event for everyone'.
